       The energy transition at a standstill The weight of Russia's
       energy power reflects the continuing centrality of fossil fuels
       in the world economy and in everyday life. The energy
       transition, which, if successful, would indeed be an energy
       revolution, has so far been very slow. In 1992, the year of the
       Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, fossil fuels represented 87% of
       total energy consumption in the world. Today, they represent
       84%. Without technological advances in storage, solar and wind
       remain intermittent primary energy sources for electricity
       generation, and while sales of personal electric vehicles are
       increasing, the transportation on which the global economy
       runs—ships and trucks – requires petroleum products.

       speeds were often low. For a relatively narrow northern island,
       the United Kingdom enjoys some of the most favorable conditions
       in the world for wind energy, but the British company ssehas
       reported that, between April and September 2021, its renewable
       assets focused on onshore and offshore wind produced 32% less
       electricity than expected.

       Low wind speeds meant power plants had to use more gas. This
       increased demand in the autumn, at a time when prices for
       natural gas imports soared under pressure from the clash with
       China and Gazprom's reluctance to supply more. The rising cost
       of fossil energy creates both a desire to speed up the energy
       transition and – as a reminder of how dependent the world
       remains on fossil fuels – an incentive for governments to
       prioritize any form of energy that is needed at that moment.
