an aromatic compound A, C7H8, on sulfonation gives two
compounds, Band C. Compound B on fusion with KCN gives D, C8H7N.
Compound D on hydrolysis gives E, C8H8O2, which on hydrolysis
gives phthalic acid. Identify A,B,C,D,E

Maybe E on oxidation gives pthalic acid? If so, then here's the
solution:
[spoiler]
So A is toluene, C6H5CH3. This, on sulphonation, gives o- and p-
methyl sulphonic acid. Call the ortho compound B, then on fusion
with KCN it gives o-methylcyanobenzene(D). This thing hydrolyses
to o-methylbenzoic acid (E), which, on oxidation with KMnO4 in
acidic medium, can give pthalic acid.
