Yes, Nitrites liberate reddish brown nitrogen dioxide even on
adding dilute acids whereas nitrates do not. The acidified
nitrite salt solution decolorizes potassium permanganate
solution but none will happen with nitrates. Also, Iodine will
liberate on adding Potassium Iodide solution to the acidified
nitrite salt solution however nitrates do not. Brucine solution
will remain colorless with nitrites whereas nitrates turn it
red.
