       Apart from AgNO3/HNO3, and Pb(NO3)2 which other reagents can be
       used to test for chloride ion?

       You can confirm almost any anions straightaway by adding
       Concentrated sulfuric acid as it is strong enough to displace
       most of the acids from their salts. For more, please visit my

       Absolutely Michel. This is a good example of reducing property
       (unusual) of Hydrogen peroxide.  This reaction is a ditto of how
       sulfur dioxide reduces cupric to cuprous ion when it passes
       through cupric salt solution containing chloride ion. But, the
       question is how it will respond to insoluble chlorides such as
       Lead chloride, Silver chloride etc .... But, I've used Magnesium
       chloride in place of Sodium chloride and it works:-)  Although,
       it is not as effective as sulfur dioxide reduction, it works
       reasonably well. So, it can be a good way to detect the chloride
       ion. Also, what I like about hydrogen peroxide is, it does not
       produce any additional compound at the end. Did you add Sodium
       hydroxide to the white precipitate? It should turn yellow on
       adding Sodium hydroxide due to the formation of cuprous oxide
       and it will turn red on heating.

       Yes, indeed I added NaOH to the mix in a separate experiment,
       and I observed the yellow precipitate formed, I wrote something
       about it here

       CuCl is hydrolysed in alkaline solutions, also interestingly
       H2O2 also precipitates Cu2O from ammoniacal complexes of Cu2+

       well, I believe I had some PbCl2 then, but now I do not have any
       insoluble Chlorides.  To test for AgCl, one could make a
       tetraammine Ag ion, releasing the Cl- then confirm the presence
       of Cl- but it's easy to admit the method is lame :D
