       Chemical awareness

       I'm writing this one to create awareness among students and
       those who are working with chemicals in the lab or at your home.
       Even teachers and schools allow some very toxic and dangerous
       compounds (like lead & cadmium salts) for practicals which
       should be avoided. These chemicals possess extreme environmental
       hazard unlike moderately toxic chemicals like Zinc and Copper
       compounds, Ammonia, sulfur dioxide etc..  which are moderately
       toxic and those can be manageable if you are not exposed
       yourself too much to such chemicals. But the below ones are not.
       I strongly recommend avoiding the below chemicals unless you are
       an expert in chemistry and having sufficient lab facilities to
       handle these chemicals.
       1. Lithium compounds (cause nerve disorder on chronic exposure)
       2. Beryllium and its compounds (Extremely toxic and
       carcinogenic)
       3. Nitrogen halides (very sensitive explosives)
       4. Fluorine and its compounds (Fluorine is the most reactive
       element and reacts almost with every element violently and
       Fluorides (its compounds) liberate hydrofluoric acid on adding
       strong acids which is extremely corrosive and toxic)
       5. Sodium metal (Violently reacts with water)
       6. Phosphorus and its compounds
       7. Oxides of chlorine, chlorates, chlorites, perchlorates,
       chloric & perchloric acid (sensitive explosives, & very
       reactive)
       8. Potassium (reacts with water explosively)
       9. Vanadium and its compounds (extremely toxic)
       10. Hexavalent chromium compounds such as chromates,
       dichromates, chromic acid, chromium trioxide  (Carcinogens)
       11. Cobalt compounds (an animal carcinogen and very harmful to
       the environment)
       12. Nickel compounds (Carcinogenic)
       13. Arsenic and its compounds (Extremely toxic and carcinogenic)
       14. Bromine (Highly toxic and corrosive)
       15. Rubidium metal (reacts with water explosively)
       16. Cadmium and its compounds (Extremely toxic and carcinogenic)
       17 Antimony and its compounds (Extremely toxic even on short
       exposure)
       18.Caesium metal (reacts with water explosively)
       19. Barium and its compounds (Very toxic and will cause
       baritosis) Exception is Barium sulfate which is safe and
       non-toxic.
       20. Mercury and its compounds (Extremely toxic and cumulative
       poison)
       21. Lead and its compounds (Extremely toxic and cumulative
       poison)
       22. Sulfur trioxide (Extremely corrosive)
       You can post any questions regarding handling chemicals,

       I was just thinking about gallium and its compounds...how common
       are they, and are they also toxic? the only Ga compound that
       readily comes to my mind is Gallium nitrate. i think its used in
       pharmacy..drug compounding or thereabout :/

       Nope, Gallium and its compounds are not considered toxic in
       general. However, oral toxicity of Gallium compounds are very
       similar to Bismuth toxicity. On ingestion (especially in
       excess), they may affect our kidneys. So, you can handle Gallium
       compounds without any problem. I do not have any Gallium
       compounds and did not see them either so far. But, I have two
       Bismuth compounds - Bismuth carbonate & Bismuth sulfate.

       Typically,  organic compounds are more subtle and dangerous
       regarding toxicity. be careful when handling organometallics,
       and shun benzene and its derivatives as much as possible,  don't
       attempt storing ethers, except you seriously know what  you're
       doing. avoid inhaling fumes of compounds and don't try to
       recognise any compounds by their smell! Be generally careful and
       cautious as much as possible in the  lab
