I guess the compound X is HCHO, Y is H2S, and they react to give
1,3,5-trithiane (Z).
HCHO+H2S-->(CH2S)3
Obviously (CH2S)3 and HCHO have similar molecular formula.
And so, W is
CH3-CH2-CH2-CH(CH3)-CH=CH2
But I still think that the answer I gave is a bit off, because
KMnO4 in acidic conditions should oxidize HCHO to CO2 readily.

And that's the correct answer! Methanal is the gas X, Y is H2S,
Z is (CH2S)3 I was more concerned with the equations than the
chemistry ;)
