Problem of the week- 1/10/12

It dosent get easier than this ;)
A hydrocarbon, W, was subjected to oxidation with hot KMnO4,
yielding 2-methylpentanoic acid and a colorless gas X. X was
reacted with another gas Y, producing a compound Z which is a
colorless solid at RT. If Z has a similar empirical formula with
X, and 1 mole of Z contains 69.6% Sulfur, find W, X, Y and Z.
What is the equation of the reaction: X+ Y-->Z ?

My attempt:
"1 mole of Z contains 69.6% "
I assumed that it is a thiol or sulfide because they can be
produced from H2S, and they could be called analogous of H2S
where a 1 or 2 H atoms are replaced by 1 or two alkyl groups
(H2S would be Y then). Then, using the 69.6%, Z could have the
molecular formula C2H6S, but neither of the possible compounds
are solids :-\.

Oh...silly me :P
I just realised a mistake in my question. Please read
again...I've replaced ''If Z is analogous with Y'' with ''If Z
has a similar empirical formula with X''
*by 'similar' I mean the way CH3Cl is similar to CH3Br
I hope this is a useful hint ;)

well, then our forum wasn't quite active, so most of the POTWs
went unreplied, then I decided to suspend it. When we had more
activity I decided to revive it.

I'm thinking colorless gas X could be methanol, probably gaseous
at reaction conditions?
