Well, Ammonia can be prepared conveniently by gently warming
ammonium salts with alkalis. Mostly people go with alkalis such
as Sodium hydroxide or Calcium hydroxide since they are pretty
cheap. Also, you can prepare it by decomposing Ammonium
carbonate. As Ammonium carbonate is not very stable, it
liberates ammonia on standing. You can perceive the strong odor
of ammonia as soon as you open the box. If you can handle
ammonium hydroxide, you can buy it too. But, please note that
30% of Ammonium hydroxide is highly corrosive and very harmful
to our eyes and having a very strong pungent odour. So, wear
gloves and safety goggle when handling high concentration of
ammonium hydroxide.
