       The Zn2+ ions are solvated by water molecules, that is water
       Zn2+ surrounded by water of hydration. Each Zn2+ hydrated by
       6H2O. That's how it dissolves. The 2es move through the wire to
       the cathode compartment, enabling the spontaneous Zn-->Zn2+ to
       continue.

       Hi there,
       I've been reviewing the responses but i seem to have more
       questions than answers. Can you recommend some books or internet
       sites which might step me through the process or even give me
       some keywords or topics to research so that I can get a better
       understanding on how and why these reactions take place, what
       certain atoms are more attracted than others, etc.

       Any good general chemistry text will be sufficient. I'd
       recommend General Chemistry by Linus Pauling, or General
       Chemistry by Darrel D. Ebbing and Steven D. Gammon. You can
       purchase any of these texts. Since the wikibook of the Linus
       Pauling is freely available, you can have a look here:

       btw Pauling worked on electronegativities and his Pauling scale
       of electronegatives is available in most GC texts.
       You could also use some links like

       to
       review the electronegativity concept. Have you already tried
