       petroleum is a naturally occuring mix of several hydrocarbons
       which could be liquid, as in crude oil, or gas, as in natural
       gas. Whether petroleum exists as liquid or gas depends primarily
       on the type of molecules in the hydrocarbon source. If they are
       primarily large molecules, the petroleum will be liquid, that is
       crude oil. But if they are small molecules, the petroleum would
       exist as natural gas. Due to the temperature (geothermal
       gradient), the petroleum in the earth crust is very fluid and
       mobile, hence it can move easily into spaces between rocks.
       Also, the high pressure in the earth crust makes it possible for
       the gasto dissolve in the liquid petroleum. In a most basic
       sense, this is a consequence of Henry’s law of gas solubility.
