       Problem of the week-29/7/12
   DIR By: Michel
       Date: July 29, 2012, 5:55 am
       ---------------------------------------------------------
5.88g of a compound of Fe, X reacted completely with 2.13g of
       Chlorine to produce 7.16g of a Chlorocomplex, Y and 0.84g of a
       toxic colorless gas, Z.
In the equation of this reaction, 1mole of each reactant combine
to form 1 mole of each product

The chlorocomplex produced was then decomposed by heating to
       produce
       3.81g of FeCl2, and 3.36g of gas Z.
The decomposition of the chlorocomplex takes the format
       Y => FeCl2 + 4Z
       Identify X, Y and Z.
Hint: Assume all reactions proceeded to completion.
It would be wise to make some guesses and see if the math holds
       up.
       Good Luck!

Y is the complex having atomic mass 238.6 and Z is the colour
less toxic gas having atomic mass 28 I think it would be half of
       iron X is iron :-\

You are on the right track, your calculations on the molar
       masses are correct.
More hints: Z is a common gas, think of any common toxic gas
       with molar mass of 28.

it may be nitrogen but I don`t know how can it be nitrogen which
is formed from Y which is formed from Fe and chlorine

       Z is toxic, It's not N2
       Try another guess :)
       It's relatively common

Si is solid at room temperature. Z is a gas at room temperature.

       No.
I'm still waiting for someone to guess what Z might be. a common
toxic gas with molar mass of ~28.0g/mol. C'mon it's an easy
       guess!
