Real Gases

An ideal gas is one which obeys the gas laws and the gas
equation PV=nRT at all the pressures and temperatures . However,
no gas is ideal. Almost all gases show deviations from the ideal
behaviour and are called real gases.
The quantity PV/nRT=Z is called compressibility factor and
should be unity for an ideal gas.

At ordinary temperatures and pressures, the van der waal forces
between the gas molecules are not very significant, however at
low temperatures and high pressures, these forces become very
significant, enough to change their state to liquid. Gases like
SO2 have strong dipole-dipole attraction making them easily
liquefied. Chlorine can be liquefied at a relatively low
pressure of 6atm.
