       Problem of the week-8/7/12

       An oily liquid, A was produced by the complete reaction between
       ammonium chloride and a liquid, B. The liquid, A was isolated
       from the other products for analysis.
       The other products of the reaction were dissolved in water, and
       analysed, and the presence of a hydroxyl group was confirmed.
       The solution was then evaporated and the flame test was carried
       out on the salt obtained. A golden yellow color was observed.
       When A was hydrolysed with water,and warmed gently, a pungent
       smelling gas, C was evolved.30 ml of The solution left after
       warming was placed in a test tube. 20ml of  2M H2SO4 was added .
       A gas was evolved which was identified as Chlorine.
       Identify A, B, and C.
       What are the products obtained when A is completely hydrolysed
       with an alkali?

       A=NCl3, B=NaOCl.
       When NaOCl reacts with NH4Cl, it gives NCl3(the oily explosive
       liquid) and NaOH+HCl, namely NaCl+H2O.
       On evaporating the NaCl(aq) we get NaCl, which gives yellow
       flame test.
       On hydrolysis Nitrogen Trichloride liberates NH3 and HCl. The
       Chloride ion gives positive H2SO4 test and liberates Cl2.
       Complete hydrolysis of NCl3 with alkali (OH-) gives NH3+Cl-+H2O.

       Congrats Potla! You are correct.
       A is NCl3 and B is NaClO
       On the hydrolysis of NCl3,
       HOCl is produced which liberates chlorine with sulfuric acid.
