EXPLANATION OF MUHAMMAD'S MARRIAGE TO AISHA
Praise and adoration be to Almighty God, and peace and blessing
be upon the final and last prophet from God (Muhammad).
One of the claims which enemies of Islam (especially Christians)
which they are using to against Islam and using to deceive
people is the matter of “Prophet Muhammad's Marriage to Aishat”,
that the age was extremed, but we should all know that they will
never love prophet Muhammad, Islam and Muslims until they make
us go astray like them as Allah said in Qur'an 2:120.
The saheeh (authentic) hadiths state that It was narrated that
‘Aaishah said: “The Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of
Allah be upon him) married me when I was six years old and he
consummated the marriage with me when I was nine years
old..……”[Bukhaari (3894) and Muslim (1422)].
Some Muslims were faulting Sahih Bukhari so as to "cover-up" the
issue. And try to proof the age of Aisha historically with
calculation to around 16-19 years but Rather than calling it a
da'eef (weak) hadith, to please your non-Muslim friends who are
insulting prophet Muhammad, the best thing is to seek the wisdom
behind this marriage as Allah says in Qur'an 21:7 & 16:43 “Ask
those who possess the message (the learned men) if you know
not”.
The first thing to know about this marriage is that it is
instruction from God as it was Narrated By 'Aisha
That the Prophet said to her, "You have been shown to me twice
in my dream. I saw your pictured on a piece of silk and some-one
said (to me). 'This is your wife.' When I uncovered the picture,
I saw that it was yours. I said, 'If this is from Allah, it will
be done." [Bukhari 5:58:235].
In Islam it is strictly prohibited to marry any girl before age
of puberty as Allah says in Quran 4:6, and we should know that
the age of puberty varies throughout difference times because
scientists said that closer to the point of equator the stage of
puberty is earlier which means the age of puberty is earlier
that time than now e.g in ancient Rome, Roman empirer was
allowed according to 1000 years back constitution 12 years old
girl to marry and 14 for boy and 20 is classified as late
marriage and it also difference base on locations and places,
the chief factors that affect the age of puberty are
temperature, climate etc. For example in America 16 years old
can marry, in the United States, back in 1880, in the state of
Delaware, the minimum age for marriage was 7yrs, In California
it was 10, In some Islamic States girl is allowed to marry less
than 10 years (if she reach puberty stage), in New York it is 14
years, in New Hampshire it is 13, As recently as 2014, in Spain
a girl of 14 years-old could get married by Law . They lifted
the age from 14 to 16 years of age as pressure was mounted on
the government.
In hot regions, girls reach puberty earlier, whereas in cold
polar regions puberty may be delayed.
We should all know that Aishat was matured i.e has reached the
age of puberty before prophet Muhammad consummated the marriage.
as stated below
At-Tirmidhi said: ‘Aa’ishah said: When a girl reaches the age of
nine years, she is a woman. [Sunan at-Tirmidhi (2/409)]
Imam ash-Shaafa‘i said: In Yemen I saw many girls aged nine who
had reached puberty. [Siyar A‘laam an-Nubala’ (10/91)]
Al-Bayhaqi (1588) narrated that ash-Shaafa‘i said: The earliest
age at which I heard of girls reaching puberty earliest women of
Tihaamah who reach puberty at the age of nine.
Ash-Shaafa‘i also said: In San‘aa’ I saw a grandmother who was
twenty-one years old; she reached puberty at the age of nine and
gave birth at the age of ten, and her daughter reached puberty
at the age of nine and gave birth at the age of ten. [As-Sunan
al-Kubra by al-Bayhaqi (1/319)]
And if we can read from history, Why is it that in the time of
prophet Muhammad those that refused his teachings and message
tried every method and strategy to against or discredit him,
they were looking for every opportunity to attack him verbally
or physically and called him many names such as Magician,
madman, soothsayer and the likes as the disbelievers used to do
to their prophets as God said in Qur'an 22:42-43 and as they
said to Jesus in John 10:20 And many of them said, He hath a
devil, and is mad; why hear ye him?”, but They NEVER raised any
question about his marriage to Aisha (R.A), Because it was
NORMAL at that time and accepted by their morals, girls at that
age were suitable for marriage at that time. And it was recorded
that When Sofiyyah bint Huyay was married to the Muhammed (SAW),
she was just 17yrs old? And that was her THIRD marriage, She was
initially married to Salam ibn abi Haqiq and later to Kinanah
ibn abi Haqiq, that means her age at first marriage will be at
the range of that. And it was also recorded that Aishat was
about to marry someone before but his father reject the marriage
because he was unbeliever, that is why she took her from the
person and prophet Muhammad asked for her in marriage and her
father accepted.
Some people said the marriage is not common even if we read from
bible we will understand because her marriage was very common.
Among the ancient cultures and societies it was custom when a
girl hits puberty she was transitioned into adulthood. This was
the stage where girls who hit puberty were deemed to be a woman,
and a time for them to be married off.
The Bible for example gives us many instances where Prophets
married very young girls, for today it may shock some readers,
but these type of marriages were very common.
- Prophet Jacob’s daughter, Dinah was given away in marriage
when she was around that kind of age to Shechem. [Genesis 30-20
and 34-2]
- There is also the case wherein King David in his old age
wasn’t getting warm in his bed. His nurses (doctors) proposed to
bring a young girl to warm him up. To bring him back to his
youthful strength. This is while King David was 70-years-old,
the girl Abishag was no older than 12-years-old when she was
married off to him: “ King David’s Marriage To 12 Year Old
Abishag
- The most common marriage that is widely known among scholars
is that of Isaac and Rebecca. According to Rashi’s commentary
Isaac was thirty-seven years old, and at that time, Rebecca was
born. He waited for her until she would be fit for marital
relations-three years-and then married her- [From Gen. Rabbah
57:1], Although the number of age is not precised in the Bible
but with the calculation of her birth to the time of marriage
make it known.
- According to the catholic encyclopedia, Mary the mother of
Jesus was 12 when she married the 99 years old Joseph.
- There is also the case with Moses and his men marrying
prepubescent girls, this is related in the Biblical verse,
Numbers 31:18 .
And if we read from history we will see many people that marry
young girls.
- Saint Augustine (350AD) married a 10 year old girl
- King Richard 11 (1400AD) he married a 7yr old girl.
- King Henry Viii (1500AD) he married a 6yrs old girl.
This marriage has a lot of roles and benefits in Islam, Aishat
narrated to us more than 2200 hadiths (sayings and deeds) of
prophet Muhammad, Aishat was exceptionally intelligent, and
since she married prophet Muhammad at a young age she was able
to learn so much from him. And she later played an important
role as a teacher, expert and interpreter of Islam.
We should also know that Prophet Muhammad didn't come to seek
this worldly pressure but he warned us to against it, his
companions described him as a man of morality, and they said he
was more shy than a virgin in seclusion, HE said each religion
is known for a kind of morality and moralty of ISLAM is shyness
and modesty. And Allah describes his character as the best and
the most high in Qur'an 68:4.
There are lot of things to gain and emulate from this marriage
such as early marriage, and scientist also proof a lot of
benefits in marry at the beginning of age of puberty, and also
we should emulate to marry without doing fornication.
