Similar to what happened to Finland

Finland was part of the Russian Empire and later had a complex
relationship with the Soviet Union, it also has a very long land
border with Russia. Some compare the invasion of the Ukraine to
the 1939 Winter War. Many believe that something is now
happening to Ukraine. There is a concrete analogy there: Finland
had been part of the Russian Empire until 1917, that is, 20
years before Stalin's attack, and the Ukraine was part of the
Soviet Union until 30 years ago. In both cases they appear as
leftovers, first from the empire and now from the USSR. And in
both cases, it is the big neighbor against the little one who
       resists beyond his strength.
Stalin is supposed to have thought that sections of the working
class would welcome the Red Army, because of the memory of the
Finnish civil war between the Reds and Whites, but there was
bitter national resistance that was not a victory for Finland
but did prevent a full invasion. Today Ukrainian flags are in
almost all public spaces in Finland. The idea, furthermore, is
that if there is a moral condemnation and economic sanctions,
that does not mean that Russia will stop the Telegram Number
       Data

aggression against Ukraine, but it does
mean that it will think twice before attacking another country.
And in the social imaginary, every Russian tank destroyed in the
Ukraine is one less tank to invade Finland. This perception is
very common. On the other hand, there is a sort of mental
       militarization of Finnish society.

Both in support for Ukraine and when thinking about national
defense: for example, there is great support for increasing the
military budget. Is this also generating geopolitical
rapprochement with Sweden? There are many discussions between
Finland and Sweden to evaluate a joint application for NATO
membership. The situation in both countries is somewhat
different. In 1948, Finland signed the Agreement of Friendship,
Cooperation and Mutual Assistance with Stalin's Soviet Union
that embodied a kind of guarded neutrality and lasted until
1992. This treaty allowed Finland to maintain its independence
and its democratic system despite being in a zone of Soviet
geopolitical influence. That generated some self-censorship, in
politics and in the press, about what was happening in the
       Soviet neighbor.
