It is getting PANNED across the board. What a mess. I was
actually hoping they might bring back the old spark with this
one. Alas! I think she did the cameo as a favor to Disney. She
is still working with them on another project, so I can get why
she succumbed and filmed the cameo even after saying, over the
years, that she is absolutely done with the franchise.

Some people here thought the same thing. Since she was working
with Disney again, on the Nutcracker, they probably asked her to
do a cameo as a favour and she accepted - or it may have been
part of her deal with Disney.
A blockbuster getting panned is not that bad. Generally, people
don't care as much about blockbusters getting bad reviews than
they care about smaller, artsy movies getting bad reviews. And
as I said before, the bad reviews are not for Keira's cameo but
rather affect Depp and the rest of the cast who play major roles
in the movie. I'm still thinking it will do well at the box
office and that is really what is most important when it comes
       to these types of movies.
As far as I'm concerned, this is still a win for Keira, even if
the movie is getting critically panned. It keeps her name in the
press and more attention usually leads to more movie role
offers. Look at Depp, with all the bad press and reviews he's
gotten for his movies in the last few years as well as his
personal life, he's still getting roles and raking it in.

A blockbuster getting panned is not always bad but when coming
off another widely panned project (Collateral Beauty), this is
not a good look. And yes, Depp is getting more roles but they
have all been flops, critically and commercially. He is pretty
much a joke at this point and plenty of articles have been
written about how he is a bad investment in terms of box office
       return.
I am not saying this is going to hurt Keira's career severely.
All I am saying is starring in back-to-back pans doesn't really
add more prestige or pedigree to her acting resume

With a role this small I don't think the success or failure of
the film - critically or financially - will reflect on her in
       any way.
And if she wanted some press exposure she should have shown up
for all the promotion like Bloom did.
I think only the first one in the series managed to get mostly
good reviews. And with Depp's recent troubles it's not too
surprising the reactions are as they are.
If it makes a lot of money - which it still might - there'll
probably be yet another one a few years down the road.

When a movie is critically panned, most of the fallout is
usually on the star. In the case of Collateral Beauty, that was
Will Smith. In the case of the latest Pirates, that's Johnny
Depp. Keira's and Orlando's return has been perceived quite
positively actually. I've read quite a few people say on blogs
they're happy to have them back.
I'm not that worried about Keira's prestige at this point. She's
known by critics for her independent roles as well as theater
roles. My worry was more her visibility. It's perfectly fine to
want to be more of a character actor and do much smaller
projects but visibility fades quickly in the entertainment
industry, and unfortunately that sometimes translates to not
getting the roles you want. Though she's not really promoting
the movie, there are a lot of articles that mention her right
       now. That's good exposure.
Don't forget, she's competing against a large staple of talented
actresses for good roles for women, of which there are few.
Keeping her name out there, even if it is for a critically
panned blockbuster is better than not being talked about at all.

Hahaha, thanks! What a prestigious honour. ;D
Well, she's still getting press exposure, albeit quite a bit
less than if she would actually promote the movie.
However, I agree. The bottom line is she's in one scene in a
brief cameo, whether the film succeeds or not, the success or
failure will not really reflect on her. But it's undeniable
she's getting some exposure from it, and to me that's positive.

I agree 100%. Collateral Beauty was bad because of Will Smith
and he was mstly blamed and this is a cameo so no one will
attach the failure of the movies to Keira, it's really not her
       movie at all!

After suffering through the mess that On Stranger Tides was, I
didn't have very high hopes for this one to begin with. So none
of the reviews really surprise me much, and Depp has pretty much
devolved into a joke of an actor at this point anyway.

Well, although the critics didn't like it, it seems audiences
did. Pirates 5 dominated the box office domestically and
       internationally this weekend:
  HTML http://www.comingsoon.net/movies/news/853013-pirates-5-box-office-sailing-to-300-million#/slide/1
So even though Keira only played a very small part in the newest
installment, I'm glad that this will still be counted as a
box-office success for her. Again, I'm not bothered by the bad
reviews, because it's a summer blockbuster and audiences tend to
care a lot less about reviews during the summertime.
There is also a recent article about why the producers asked her
to do Pirates 5. Apparently test audiences were asking why
Elizabeth Swann didn't appear in the latest Pirates tale:

I think fans were happy she was back in it, if only for a few
minutes. I don't think this movie matters much in terms of her
career. No one will hold the reviews against her and no one will
consider her a main reason for the box office.
I'm ready for her next slew of films for sure!
