Keira Knightley finds a revolutionary role in portraying
Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette, a young woman lacking a dowry in the
countryside of France. The older and more sophisticated Willy
(Dominic West) woos and marries her, taking her to the refined
city of Paris. There, the two battle one another as their
financial woes worsen. Her eloquent writing skills become their
lifeline, but she is not allowed the credit. On the surface, it
sounds like a typical time-period story, but Colette pushes the
day's viewpoint on sexuality, fidelity and gender acceptance.
It's an unexpected story filled with beautiful surprises that
are relevant even in today's world. Knightley and West are
magical together, even when they are oil and vinegar. Beautiful
imagery and costuming bring us into this world as we are
captivated by this true story.
Yeah, that's certainly possible.
If The Aftermath is good enough to be a major awards player in
the bigger categories though, someone will have to decide which
performance to focus on to get her a nomination, because she's
the lead in that one too.
If she really has two performances up for consideration she
could end up splitting her votes.
That's what I am afraid of. It happened to Julianne Moore. They
can also go the category fraud route (everyone does it these
days --- I mean Alicia Vikander won a supporting actress oscar
for a leading role.) and push her as supporting in the
aftermath.
True. Sometimes when someone has a big year with several films
doing well, they can just coalesce around one role to reward
them for the whole year. That was kind of like what happened
with Alicia Vikander, because she was also in Ex Machina the
same year.
I also remember the year The Departed came out, Leonardo
DiCaprio was in both that and Blood Diamond. No one knew what he
would get nominated for, because he kept getting nominated for
both at places like SAG and the Golden Globes. The Departed was
the bigger movie overall, because it won Best Picture and
everything, but he ended up getting nominated for Blood Diamond.
Something like that could happen with these films, IF both of
them get a lot of attention.

I'm just so happy that most of the reviews have been so glowing.
And I love that some of the reviewers are acknowledging her as
an actress that has gravitas. Most of these reviewers spoke of
her in respectful tones when they reviewed her performance,
which is just so lovely to see. There was a time, when that
wasn't the case and hopefully that is behind us for god.

Ok, so I found a brief review on Twitter after the industry
screening at TIFF on September 7.
The reviewer is a senior film critic at BuzzFeed. It's a pretty
nice review and I'm sure this is going to be followed up by a
longer review sometime during the next week.
HTML https://twitter.com/adambvary/status/1038180570587643905
Also, a few more reviews have been posted on Rotten Tomatoes,
including two rotten ones. However, I don't think all of these
critics were at the TIFF screening, so I'm not sure where they
caught the movie.
Here is Canadian film critic Richard Crouse talking about the
movie and Keira and calling her performance "great".
HTML https://www.cp24.com/video?clipId=1480434
So, since little happened after the press screening on the 7th
of September, likely most reviews for the movie will come in
after the 11th, since I'm guessing film critics will attend the
offical premiere of the movie at TIFF.

New reviews came in tonight and they're really good for our
girl!
The reviewer didn't love the movie, but he really did love
Keira's performance! ;D

Great one for Keira!

And a few more:

That's it for me. I likely won't be online tomorrow, because I
have a family emergency going on, which is also the reason I
missed the TIFF premiere. :'(
Hope to see new glowing reviews when I come back!

least another dozen plus to come in around Friday, since the
movie opens in limited release then.

A rave from Rolling Stone. Written by Peter Travers. Wow!
"A radiant, riveting Keira Knightley meets every challenge the
title role of French novelist Colette throws at her — and
there’s a nonstop onslaught of them"

I'm so excited! Manohla Dargis in the New York Times liked the
movie too- she called Keira vibrant and said she skillfully
takes Colette from youth to adulthood.
Honestly, I feel like these are probably her best personal
reviews since...Atonement? As a lead I mean. She did get some
very good ink for Anna Karenina from a lot of people, but since
the movie was so divisive, that kind of overshadowed it.
It annoys me though, because these ARE the kinds of reviews that
could lead to a nomination if the movie just had more buzz.
People like the movie, it's timely, her reviews are GREAT, but
it feels like no one's talking about it for awards season. A
better release date and a better PR campaign from Bleeker is
what's needed.

I think Bleecker is not doing a good enough job to push the
movie to the awards chatter insiders, bloggers and journalists.
Besides the Feinberg oscar chatter interview and a few short
stories on deadline and variety, I haven't seen much effort to
engage with that audience. With that said, I can see the tide
changing soon if Bleecker wakes up. There is still time and
she's got some flat out raves from respectable critics and
publications. There is still hope but bleecker needs to act
quickly. I've always said from the very beginning, despite a lot
of skepticism on here, that Keira can be a frontrunner if
Bleecker plays their cards right. She has the reviews and the
movie with the timely message. All that is left is the
marketing. I still stand by that statement but Bleecker hasn't
done a great job so far so we'll see.

I agree with both of you. First, yes, I think these are the best
reviews of her career (and there's more yet to come, but it
seems that the trend is high praise for Keira's acting). So,
it's quite sad to see that Bleecker Street is not doing more to
promote her and the movie.
BUT, then I looked at the full release schedule for North
America on Bleecker Street's website:
Release Schedule
SEPTEMBER 21
Los Angeles • New York
SEPTEMBER 28
Atlanta • Boston • Chicago • Dallas/Ft. Worth • Denver • Los
Angeles •
Minneapolis • Phoenix • Portland • San Francisco • Seattle • St.
Louis • Washington D.C.
OCTOBER 5
Austin • Baltimore • Detroit • Houston • Indianapolis •
Philadelphia •
Sacramento • San Antonio • San Diego
EVERYWHERE OCTOBER 12
The point here is that this opens everywhere (in North America
that is) on October 12. This coincides PERFECTLY with the BFI
screenings, which are scheduled from Oct 11 to 13. So, what I
think will happen is that this is when Bleecker Street will give
the movie and her performance a big push, as it is also more
timely in line with awards season. At least this is my theory.
Again, Colette is their big Fall movie and their one awards
season contender. Keira's reviews have been fabulous so far and
if they have a smart marketing team, they will take advantage of
that.
The fact that it opens everywhere in the middle of October
actually is more in line what people on this website wanted for
release date. And, given the movie starts limited released three
weeks earlier, it keeps Colette in conversation.
Thoughts?
Edit: Oh and I forgot to add one more thing. The Nutcracker
comes out three weeks after the movie is officially released
everywhere and after the BFI festival. So, maybe, just maybe,
this is what Bleecker Street is going for to push the big
exposure into October/November.
