       The Weinstein Scandal
   DIR By: TheImitationWavess

I wasn't sure whether I should broach this topic, but I feel
like this is almost the elephant in the chat room. Given the
size of the scandal, I thought maybe to have a bit of a
discussion about it with you guys, since we have been chatting
       partners for years.
You all have probably heard about Harvey Weinstein being exposed
as a sexual predator. Some actresses and reporters, who were his
victims, have come out and spoken out against him. Some
actresses and actors have released statements. Those include
Meryl Streep, Kate Winslet, Dame Judi Dench and Glenn Close.
Some of those actors and actresses who claim they didn't know
about what was going on and some admit they've heard rumours.
I don't know what to think. I don't think I can believe that
they didn't know. I think they must have at least caught rumours
about inappropriate behaviour. Especially, because the rumour
mill has been going for years. I think we even joked during the
Imitation Game promotion that Keira placed her husband between
       her and Harvey.
I don't know how many times Keira had to do publicity with
Harvey (apart from The Imitation Game), but what do you guys
think, should she make a statement?
Edit: If you guys don't feel comfortable with this topic, I can
also delete the thread. I only thought maybe to see what your
thoughts are since Keira did have to do publicity with him.

No, we can talk about it!
I was sort of wondering if Keira might put out a statement of
her own, since she had made it a point to speak out for more
women's stories in Hollywood, female producers, directors,
writers, etc. She has been outspoken about that in recent years,
and this kind of thing ties into it.
Plus, yeah, she worked with Harvey (as so many actors have) for
Imitation Game and also Begin Again, right? So she has more
recent experience with him. I'm guessing he probably didn't
harass her, since it seems he went after women who were
assistants or just starting out actresses, etc.
I wouldn't be surprised if she does put out a statement on this,
       to support the women.

I don't think Keira should make a statement. Women are being
pressured into making statements while all the men are silent.
Ironic considering men generally have more power and influence
and therefore have less to lose by speaking out.
I will say that I have always had a bad feeling about Keira's
relationship with Harvey. Remember when he was aggressively
trying to make her a Weinstein girl? He wanted her to be the
"spokesmodel" for the Weinstein company. She turned down his
offer and went with Chanel instead. He wasn't very happy about
her decision --- he said so in not so recent interview (I think
this was during The Imitation Game promo). I don't think it's a
coincidence that Keira's rejection of the Weinstein offer
happened around the time she was drifting from Hollywood and
focusing on making arthouse European movies. I've always felt
like Keira purposefully decided to stay and work in Europe
because she was very uncomfortable with the treatment of women
in Hollywood. I think this was the main reason why she turned
down the Weinstein offer. I've always respected Keira for that
decision. I am sure her agents and management were not happy
because being a Weinstein girl means Oscars, press and juicy
roles. I respect Keira for walking away from all of that. I
think she chose her sanity over fame.
On a lighter and more positive, Keira got a new movie in the bag
and she is PRODUCING the project. I am so excited for her.

I didn't know that. Interesting. So I guess that would have been
       around 2006 or 2007?
Hmm. She was very young then, but had already had massive
success with the Pirates movies and gotten the Oscar nod for
Pride and Prejudice. She started out so young and had so much
success at an early age. I wonder what she's had to face from
       men like this.

I am torn whether she should or shouldn't.
I'm sure she was aware of the rumours. I also agree with you,
Joan Bennett, that this is probably one of the biggest reasons
why she chose to stay in Britain and do mostly small European
movies instead of becoming a Hollywood star. I think the biggest
reason her mother traveled with her to movie shoots when she was
a teen and a young adult were because of people like Harvey.
It's sad what actresses, and actors, sometimes have to face to
make it in the industry. And you're right, she has been a
supporter and she has spoken out about the treatment of women in
       Hollywood over a decade ago.
If she does put out a statement, I hope it's just a short
statement supporting the victims. I do not think it's necessary
to go into details about what was known. I think most actors and
actresses who had dealings with Weinstein were aware of rumours.

You are correct. She officially joined Chanel in 2006.

I almost started a thread as well, since she has worked with him
recently. Interesting about Chanel. I wonder what she knows, and
it breaks my heart that the women who knew and especially the
victims felt they had to keep quiet. It’s up to her if she wants
to make a public statement, I understand why she would and
wouldn’t, but I feel confident she supports these women at least
       privately.
I’m also saddened to think that Harvey is almost definitely one
       of many.

I agree with JoanBennett that she shoudn't. It's ridiculous that
only the women are targeted to make statements and none of the
male actors are. Enough with the women suffering. I think that
Weinstein targeted women who were at the beginning of their
career so that he could feel in total power and control and I am
not surprised that Streep and company didn't really know because
they were already famous and older and certainly would have
destroyed him for even trying. So he went to the weak ones. It's
disgusting and horrible but I also feel that we are making women
responsible again for something that is so ingrained in the the
male hollywood culture so why shouldn't Comberabatch, Damon, the
Afflecks and comapany make statements? Enough with revictimizing
       the victims!

No reason not to have a thread about this. In fact it's good to
have some activity - even if it's about the dark side of the
       industry.
I'm pretty sure she's only been in two films which had any kind
of Weinstein connection. Begin Again and The Imitation Game. And
for both of those Weinstein bought the North American rights
after they had been finished. He'd only have been involved in
distributing and promoting them - not before or during
       production.
So I don't see any need for her to release a statement or make
comments. Unless she's personally witnessed something awful she
thinks needs to be made public, but she may very well not have.
After all I doubt Harvey has molested every single person who's
been in a film he's released. And by 2013 when the Begin Again
rights were sold she wasn't exactly an unknown youngster
desperate for a chance to make it in Hollywood. She was already
rich and famous and with a husband tagging along to most
       promotional events.
And it wouldn't make sense to me that The Weinstein Company
would employ a spokesmodel. But if they were indeed looking for
an actress to do promotion for them back in 2005 I would have
thought they'd go for someone who'd actually been involved in at
       least one of their films.
