I think that Valjean didn't know what to do and the world was
growing dark to him because he thought of the past and all that
       he went through and done.

It Means That He Doesnt Have Any Hope And He Doesnt Know What To
       Do.

I think he opened the window because he was looking for hope and
just like the stars weren't there then his hope wasn't there
       either.

I think the significance of Valjean opening the window, and not
seeing one star in the sky, was because it symbolizes how he's
wrestling with himself. He couldn't figure out an idea of what
to do, whether or not to turn himself in. Jean cannot decide
what to do, just like there's no star in the sky. He wants to do
the right thing, go on the right path like the Bishop said, but
he doesn't want to be condemned. And since there's "not a star
in the sky" I'm sure it it a symbolization for the fact that
Valjean doesn't know what to do with his choices, that there's
       almost no win-win option.
