In line 72 it says, "A moment later he blew out his candle. It
bothered him." Why do you think Valjean did this?

i think it bothered Jan Valjean because it represented hif life
if he confessed his life would be over. the candle died & so
would he if he stepped up and said it is him .

I think the reason he blew out the candle because he didn't want
to reveal himself in the light that the candle put out.

I think he did that because he thought someone could see him.
His conscience was getting to him.

Valjean did this because he was trying to think of what to do.
He was trying to think whether he should tell the truth or not
speak at all.

I think Jean Valjean blew out his candle because he was trying
to hide himself from what he should do. Valjean feels terribly
guilty for possibly staying quiet, because he wouldn't be
truthful to God. So, by blowing out his candle, he felt he could
hide from himself, hide from the fact that he could possibly
send an innocent man to prison. Jean knows what's right, he
knows that the right thing would be to speak up; but he doesn't
want to see himself as a monster for considering this.

i think the candle represeted life . when it blew out he thought
he was going to die if he dident tell it was him . it bothered
him very muchh. at this point he just doesent know what to do ,
because if he told he would be in trouble and if he dident he
would live with guilt. /:

I think that it bothered Valjean blowing out the candle because
to him that represented his hope for the future.
