On the topic of "thieves" and land claims.

---------------------------------------------------------
The issue came up the other day and I will address it here for
all to see.
First, taking land claims is legal if the land claim is:
1) in a PvP area.
2) illegally placed in a PvE area (like a Hardware store or gas
station). I would rather you let me know in such cases so I can
identify the culprit and talk to them. They may be unfamiliar
with the rule, or merely forgot. This way we avoid
misunderstandings, which can result in people potentially having
hurt/bad feelings toward another.
3) there could also be the case that someone places a land claim
(I don't know why they would do this) out in the middle of the
road or some place in the PvE area and leave it to expire. In
this case, feel free to take it.
It is not ok to take one if:
It is in a PVE area base. (other than stores they are not
allowed to claim in the PvE area such as hardware/gun stores
etc.) This includes expired land claims--if it is an obvious
player-used structure, even if it is a hole in the ground with
chests or merely a sleeping bag and foundation-- leave it alone.
They may come back.
If they lose one in a droppedbackpack, it is fair game.
Generally I find on this server someone won't take it, sometimes
they may. Even if you are in the PvE area it is not illegal to
take it. If they didn't kill you illegally, it is your
responsibility to keep it off your toolbelt, and your
responsibility to get back to your backpack. It may a bit
discourteous if they are aware it is yours, but it does not
justify a foul-mouth tirade targeting them.
Suppose you are with someone in a town--not friends--but both
PvE. If one dies with a land claim on their toolbelt, I would
expect the other player to do the right thing and:
1) leave it alone
2) make a chest for that player and leave their stuff inside
3) place their stuff in a loot container nearby
4) take it to them
5) maybe guard it for them
This includes people new to the game/server who don't know about
the toolbelt. I could say it is their responsibility to read the
server settings first, but I show leniency with players new to
the game and new to the server--provided they have a good
attitude.
The above are the actions I expect on the PvE side from a
respectful and mature community.
But let me be clear. Even if they loot your backpack they are
not cheating scumbags who deserve to die, or whatever nasty
remark someone comes up with in frustration. They may in fact be
someone who is not familiar with the dynamic here, but also
could someone who is better off not playing here if their first
instinct is to snatch it up. I consider looting of other
players' backpacks in such a scenario a breach of the spirit of
our rules in the aforementioned case because that is not our
type of player but I will not vilify nor will I allow that
player to be vilified for it.
However, if someone is running through the forest and sees a
backpack...and they ask:
--- Quote ---
> "Did anyone on the PvE side die at location"
--- End Quote ---
...and get no response, then it is fair game.
The reason I consider it fair game at that point could be one of
a few reasons:
1)The player who died may not log on again, they "ragequit".
2)Maybe they died again, and lost that backpack icon.
3)Who knows
I would ask that if you die, get to your backpack or be aware if
someone finds it. If the icon disappears on your
backpack-retrieval, speak up. More likely than not the person
will meet you halfway as that is the nature of our community. If
someone is the type of player who is looting PvE backpacks,
taking land claims, and then argues rules with me, they may not
be suited to play here. I want players who abide by the spirit
as well as the letter of the law.
PvE players: Show some respect and courtesy to PvP players as
well. Much is made about players respecting other players'
play-styles...this cuts both ways.
1) If a PvP player kills you within a city or other PvP area,
tough cookies.
2) If they loot your backpack in that PvP area, tough cookies.
3) If they raid your base that is in a PvP area and take your
land claim during the raid, tough cookies.
4) If they take loot during that raid, tough cookies.
Show some class and remember what we mean by wanting a mature
and respectful community. This includes good sportsmanship. If
someone "steals" your stuff (this word came up) then yes, they
are a thief. And while intent can be hard to convey it text more
oft than not, be mindful. There is a big difference between a
good-natured remark and a spiteful one which can look the same.
For example h0tr0d finds someone got his backpack after he died
(like Deathmate did). I can say:
--- Quote ---
> "You took my stuff! I'll get you you bastard! *shakes fist in
the air*"
--- End Quote ---
which I hope implies a sort of role-playing remark in a
good-natured akin to an
--- Quote ---
> argh! I'll get you back you dirty rotten scoundrel!"
--- End Quote ---
or....
--- Quote ---
> "Deathmate you thief!"
--- End Quote ---
which can be taken different ways, couldn't it?
The reason it could be taken in different ways is because the
use of the word thief depends upon whether they actually "stole"
something. A thief, by definition, is someone who steals
another's property...usually by stealth. Stealing is defined as
illegally taking that property. By calling him a thief I am
saying he did something illegal.
This is why I ask for care with words. If someone said
--- Quote ---
> "h0tr0d you thief!"
--- End Quote ---
I could take it one of two ways. Either they are implying I did
something illicit, or it is feigned rage in a good-natured way.
This then gets into the whole adding smiley faces on the ends of
sentences; otherwise we are left to discern the true intent
through our rapport and/or previous experiences with the other
player thereby we know where the speaker is "coming from". The
point is to be courteous by choosing the appropriate words and
tone. Emotional intelligence helps.
Then there is the more extreme...
--- Quote ---
> "You took my stuff you asshole! This is supposed to be a
friendly server!"
--- End Quote ---
While the latter may be extreme, it illustrates my point.
No matter how frustrated you get, or disappointed, mature people
handle it the right way. We all have had moments where we are
frustrated and yell at the monitor and we say that
--- Quote ---
> "the game cheats"
--- End Quote ---
or
--- Quote ---
> "that is bullshit"
--- End Quote ---
, or any number of things. If someone kills us in a duel, we may
cry
--- Quote ---
> "lag!"
--- End Quote ---
or
--- Quote ---
> "bullshit I hit you!"
--- End Quote ---
and it is usually because we are frustrated and we then lash
out as a result of that frustration.
I would ask you to take a deep breath and remember it's a game.
A game in Alpha. On a server where we have no real incidents of
people being pricks. Usually it is just some misunderstanding or
people that are frustrated who speak (type) before calming down
and sometimes that frustration may be a result of something
outside of the game.
Please think and be mindful. Because while I will not tolerate
someone violating a PvE player's base, camping another player's
bag, or any number of malicious things, I will also not tolerate
someone implying or accusing someone of perfidy merely because
you are frustrated. You are adults, so ultimately you make your
own decisions and do what you feel you must, but I have found
better outcomes come with taking a moment and thinking things
through You could also come to me for assistance...in a
non-hostile manner. But understand your words are your
responsibility just as your actions are, and with both come
consequences.
More often than not I can find the answer and if you handle it
maturely, help you out. Someone who screams
--- Quote ---
> "hacks"
--- End Quote ---
and
--- Quote ---
> "cheats"or "bullshit"
--- End Quote ---
will not receive sympathy from me; that is immature behavior.
Someone who says
--- Quote ---
> "damn someone raided me and took my stuff, I forgot I was in a
PvP area"
--- End Quote ---
is more likely to receive another land claim from me as a token
of thanks for being a good sport.
This thread was not meant to point fingers at any one person in
particular, so please don't get offended. Rather it is to
address and *nip in the bud*, as it were, comments which I have
seen cause issues in the past. So don't respond to this thread
defensively. Just remember...
Respect goes both ways...PvE and PvP. You are all part of the
same community.
