My apologies

We always try and do what we feel is in the best interest of
everybody and it looks like maybe this missed the target!
My apologies.
The release actually went out yesterday and I left it on the old
seed all night while comparing files and testing things out; I
stayed up all night doing this.
I pushed an announcement that we would be updating hours before,
but I imagine most of you were sleeping and then went to work
etc.
I wouldn't have pushed a new seed but when they say things like
"fixed the teleportation bug" that was enough to update for me.
Whenever they do an update and you keep all the old files
there's a few things at play.
1) You have people who want to play the new update and will go
elsewhere, why play with old bugs?
2) You may still have old bugs or unexpected results when
keeping an old seed/files with an update.
3) People are disappointed that their progress is halted or
their work is gone and I don't like that either, but it isn't as
if we have a heads up. The announcement comes from out of the
blue and usually a player lets me know or I find out when Steam
auto-updates my version. It always, always is a version dropped
out of nowhere and it may be frustrating but it is what we deal
with. It is then my job to update things as best we can.
Keep in mind we were not on the current stable version. We were
on an experimental build and once, during the seed, rolled back
to the "stable" version to see if it helped lag and it did not.
So we went back to the "latest experimental", which was what...
16.b1 or something?
Then this rolls out, and people's clients update. They had
already chosen to opt in the latest experimental so it updates
top what we have now. They don't have each experimental release
saved, so you can only "roll back" to a "stable" version.
Given that we were not on a stable version, once games had been
updated, there was no way for us to go back to the previous
experimental. I could only roll back to a "stable" version,
which then every client would have to do also.
Essentially, if Steam updates our player base's files, even just
some, they will be unable to play on the server unless we
update. So the only way to ensure everyone can still log in and
play is to update or roll back (and then require them to roll
back) to a certain version.
And you would be playing and getting teleported to the surface
which absolutely frustrated me to no end.
Madman usually wakes up and does a server restart before work,
and I was working on files as he did so. So what happened was I
was stuck in a position where I had to work to update as fast as
I could since the old files were unable to be saved with the
restart.
He PMed me about the update yesterday afternoon and I should
have told him I would be working on the server so do not restart
it. Candor Falcon was in Teamspeak with me when it happened...I
was in desperation mode to get the server up and running.
Server restarts can be automated but sometimes, and especially
with this game, we require more restarts due to the memory leak.
I keep in contact with our host and ask about server load and
resource usage at x time with x players and such. When they tell
me within 20 minutes of a restart we are using 12GB of memory
(such as some of the old versions) it is an issue with the game,
not the server or players.
I try and restart the server every 4-7 hours, sometimes it is
longer, other times shorter. I cannot wait for everyone to log
out all the time because...well...here is an example.
40 players online.
10 are afk.
20 are paying attention.
I call for a restart soon.
20 log out.
2 come back from afk and log out.
3 minutes have passed. I wait 2 more. 5 people log in.
2 people come back from afk and log out.
4 of the people who logged out 7 minutes ago log back in.
There is never a time when everyone is logged out and I can
restart. I have also encountered bugs where if I catch people
logging in/out/in while doing a restart(s) it corrupts their
player files and I have to delete them. That is what I do not
want. There have also been dupes surrounding server restarts so
I try not to be too expected. I figure the worst is someone is
annoyed, and if they lose something or encounter an issue due to
the restart. I try to help them out.
It is an alpha game where the devs drop updates out of the blue.
The option of "we will update in 2 days" does not exist. I don't
know when each and every player will log back on, some may play
only weekends so some people get caught up in no man's land.
You have every right to be frustrated but there has to be an
understanding that this comes with alpha and Madman is not to
blame here. If anything it is a lack of communication, but when
do I do the update? Do I wait for PST people to be home from
work and the EST people miss the update because they are in bed?
Do I wait for the weekend and then push it out? And then, for
CST prime time?
We have an international player base and I do not cater to any
group specifically; I try to keep the server running as smoothly
as possible, keep the server updated and compatible with players
as fast as I can, and most of all, provide a safe and friendly
environment for players.
This is what I want people to remember. We may have seeds wiped,
bases lost, profiles deleted, last-minute updates, unexpected
restarts, lost minibikes...but what Madman and myself try to do
for this server is not worry over those first.
We try and mitigate the above to help you guys have fun and not
be frustrated by our primary focus, the first and foremost thing
we look to do, is provide players with a safe and friendly
environment free of hackers, cheaters, griefers, drama, and
negativity. We don't look to restart or update unexpectedly but
if I have to choose I focus on a safe and friendly environment
for players to play in.

The CBSM is down so people don't waste vote points and zcoins on
items until the dev and I can find a fix. Right now when you buy
something it doesn't appear and I don't want people wasting
points.

The Server was on 7 days Alpha 16.1 unless it was updated at
some point I wasn't aware of. I was playing with the 16.1 Client
though which WAS listed as Stable NOT experimental. But anyways
we understand things happen and it's not your fault or the
server's fault. My friend and I mostly just stay at base
building while we have other's in our group who go out and loot.
As we spend the majority of our time building we pour a ton of
time and planning into our builds and base defenses and we are
just tired of constantly getting to a point where we are happy
with the way our builds are going and then being forced to
restart because the Fun Pimps can't get their act together. We
most likely will be back on the server at some point in the
future but for now we just want to take a break while we check
out some of the updates for other games our group plays.
