PVP struggles
DIR By: Discern

---------------------------------------------------------
Hey guys, after being on the server for about a month I've
realized the vast majority of the population is living north and
thus involved in PVE. I have nothing against PVE but I feel like
the incentives to pvp on this server are lacking. I enjoying
raiding bases but I don't ever grief someone to where they can't
live there or are absolutely broke. (All the bases I've found so
far are abandoned as I can place frames but the protection
toughness is still active) I only take what I need (gas food
coins ammo etc) and leave the rest (tools, gear and such). That
being said, I am currently afk raiding someone's base with tape
on my mouse button so I can keep hitting while I'm making this
post on my cellphone.....It's kind of sad that the pvp gameplay
on this sever has been reduced to this. The gas on this server
is a lot harder to farm as well which makes raiding even more
difficult. I could really go on forever about this topic about
the lack of incentives for pvp...but your server population
speaks for itself, 85-90% pve on this server because the
parameters scare off pvpers. Who said people can't raid others
in a mature manner? Don't you think that people who chose to pvp
understand they can get raided? All I would like is a compromise
of some sorts. Wether it be to lower the claim protection to x24
or x32 (which are the two most popular choices on other pvp
servers) or it to be bag drop all on death so that pvp actually
means something, Rather than people being sissys and clearing
their tool belt if they are in a pinch or about to die. It's
really frustrating playing on a server that doesn't have any
incentives for pvp and that's why your population of pvpers is
lacking and diminishing. I hope that my post can be taken into
serious consideration, I like the prospects of a well maintained
server (passworded and resets etc) but I think at this point I'd
rather take my chances with hackers and cheaters so long as I'm
able to participate in what I enjoy about the game, which is
pvp. To me, pvp encompasses much more than just shooting another
player for a number next to your name.

what types of incetives for pvp do you have in mind?
If Im not mistaken a while ago all towns used to be pvp, wich
added an adrenaline rush every time you entered one. As a pve
player I almost never go to the south. The only time I made a
base in the south in an old seed I remember having the feeling
that south of the map there were less towns than in the north.
No idea if this is still the case, but may be one incentive
could be if it were the other way around.

You are correct; we tried an all towns approach. It frustrated
PvE players and encouraged camping as well as the number of
"accidental shootings arose". Administrative nightmare.

This has been the case for years; we have always had more PvE
players thasn PvP.

Such as?

Good; such are my rules.

Fallacy of reasoning. Just because you are doing that does not
mean it follows that all PvP for everyone has been reduced to
this. We had quite a bit of PvP action the weeks prior.
--- Quote from: Discern link ---
> The gas on this server is a lot harder to farm as well which

It's harder to get thousands of gas from gas pumps; this does
not follow that it is harder to "farm" gasoline. Interesting
choice of words since I added an option to make gasoline through
cotton.
You also have more oil at your disposal which is needed to make
repair kits for guns...as well as augers and chainsaws which are
used in raiding.

Again, causal fallacy. Just because our population has a
majority of PvE players it does not follow that there are a lack
of incentives for PvP. Quite the opposite, actually. I offer
"peace of mind" PvP where people can go south to get their
adrenaline rush without fear of being raided and potentially
losing all of their items.
Your idea of incentives may vary or not vary but I have come to
find that the determining factor for people to stop PvP or
playing a seed is that (in the PvP sense) that their base has
been violated and/or they have been cleaned out).
The parameters to dot "scare off" PvP players; we have a number
of just the type of PvPers here that I want. It just goes with
any seed that after a few weeks PvP action can get stale...they
stall ad then later PvP players join and wonder where the action
is. This is a recurring cycle and not new since you joined. And
this is not Rust or a game where you re-spawn with load-outs.
It is more a Turn-based strategy game mixed with real-time
strategy. Most raiding occurs when people are offline which
people find hardly sportsmanlike.
Our parameters are designed to attract the type of player versus
a quantity of players bent towards PvP.
--- Quote from: Discern link ---
> Who said people can't raid others in a mature manner?
--- End Quote ---
History. Plus the subjective nature of how different raiders
(and the raided) define mature which is why I define parameters.
It would be relatively easy to manage a laissez-faire PvP
server; however, this is not Rust.
--- Quote from: Discern link ---
> Don't you think that people who chose to pvp understand they
can get raided?
--- End Quote ---
Rhetorical question. They may understand but it is never fun to
build a secret base to PvP in the south from and have a more
"hardcore" player(s) come along and "pwn" them. You could
counter with "then they could team up" and we could go round and
round with what people could or could not do and why or why not.
--- Quote from: Discern link ---
> All I would like is a compromise of some sorts.
--- End Quote ---
We have done so, after months of discussion if not years of it.
Years of refinement for sure.
--- Quote from: Discern link ---
> Wether it be to lower the claim protection to x24 or x32
(which are the two most popular choices on other pvp servers) or

something,

Will not happen.
While I do not like how breaking into someone's base is more of
a time-consuming grind than anything, I would much rather people
run and gun and set traps in towns/cities than just "Have fun
storming the castle".
I find it is relatively easy to gear up in this game without
needing to slay the dragon. It isn't like some form of MMO
where you need to raid a target to acquire certain pieces of
loot.
--- Quote from: Discern link ---
> Rather than people being sissys and clearing their tool belt
if they are in a pinch or about to die.
--- End Quote ---
Opinions vary. People clearing their belts is considered to be
an act of cowardice by some; a smart tactic by others. What if
you are facing overwhelming odds and your stores aren't what
theirs are?
Calling people "sissies" or insinuating they are cowards is not
what I want here. If you are frustrated lay better traps or
become proficient at getting the kill before they have that time
to clear said belt.
--- Quote from: Discern link ---
> It's really frustrating playing on a server that doesn't have
any incentives for pvp and that's why your population of pvpers
is lacking and diminishing.
--- End Quote ---
You stated as much before and again; this is a causal fallacy. I
would equally like more PvP action but I have found it cannot be
forced; it must be organic. I set the stage, as it were, prepare
an environment conducive for people to PvP if they choose
without the negatives involved (aside from dying obviously) and
it is up to the players to create the server they want.
Oh, and players can help encourage PvP also. It isn't an admin's
responsibility to get people to PvP. There are ways to encourage
people to PvP and suggestions you could have made to me but have
not.

--- End Quote ---
I take every post as it is meant and rest assured this very
topic has been hashed and rehashed for years; it has to be the
players and an organic experience.
If you would rather play with hackers and cheaters that is your
choice; however, dramatics do not change the fact that they are
precisely why my parameters exist. I'd rather have no PvP and a
server of people who enjoy the game without drama than have to
deal with hackers/griefers/cheaters just so I can have a higher
percentage of PvP players.

Yup. Which is why raiding shouldn't be your focus. For me it was
the thrill of the hunt; one day I spent 8 hours (laying a
trap...DEEP helped) for one kill.
Thoroughly enjoyable.
Get TFP to fix the offline/online land-claim modifier bug.
Get them to give me my CTF dynamic that I have asked for.

Note the dates. Aug 2014.
I have spent countless hours trying to "get" PvP going and I
concluded it is up to the player base to choose or chose not to.

Everyone is different, not everyone will enjoy spending 8 hours
setting up traps, we should try to keep the community in focus
not our own personal likes or dislikes.
I would just like to disregard my previous post and simply ask
the question, why is the server not attracting many pvpers?
Moreover, a personal question, do you want pvpers on your
server?

Why isn't there more PvP on the server?
After being on this server for over a year, and seeing how
others play on it, I think there is the issue of "feeling ready"
for PvP. If my first login to a server shows me players 10 or
more levels above me then I feel that I need to build up my
skills before going into a fight. If someone joins the server in
the first in-game week than they have a bit of an advantage as
all of the POIs have loot for them and the 1st horde is a cake
walk. If PvP is your focus then getting in on a new seed ASAP
gives you the advantage. I am always in the South because I want
to be able to claim POIs that are not available in the North.
Most bases I see are designed to keep players from being able to
break in, but there are some that will spend hours with their
"mouse button taped down" to get inside.
So the question stands, "Why isn't there more PvP on the
server?"
If PvP players are Level 100+ or at the cap then I don't really
want to have a duel in the open, I will need to set traps and
try to catch them by surprise. Where do I do this though? Do I
make a small building outside their base and hope to catch them
when they go investigate? Maybe. Do I lay traps in GZ and hope
we are online at the same time so I can get them to chase me
into my traps? Maybe.
I think the main question is, "What kind of PvP do YOU want
engage in?" Once you can voice that you can invite others to
join in it.
Some players try to get you to meet them at GZ to PvP, but that
to me sounds like walking into an ambush.

"Get TFP to fix the offline/online land-claim modifier bug."
Lots of points to be made both ways, but this is the heart of
why I don't put a base in the South. I head South on occasion
to player-hunt (I even put in a Chunnel entrance there to make
it easier to Northerners to approach 0,0), but I don't build a
base there because the offline modifier doesn't work. Nothing
says lame to me like logging in to find out you've been raided
because you were too busy to login to the server over the
weekend.
On the other hand, if I'm online and you can still manage to
raid my base then you are welcome to all the loot your pack can
carry.
Again, this comes down to opinion and PVP expectations, but my
ideal situation would be a low/non-existent LCB modifier while
online and a high/invincible modifier when offline--but the
settings for this are broken right now.
But this is because I see PVP as being Player-vs-Player--not
Player-vs-OfflinePlayer'sBase.

To the point about nothing lamer than logging on to see your
base raided... please keep in mind that you are speaking from
the perspective of a PVE player. IF someone finds my base and
raids it in the south, then good for them, they deserve it. I
will see where I screwed up in my base design or my ability to
hide it and I will modify from there. Honestly I would prefer
to get legit raided so that I have something more to do in the
game, as killing players is not an option due to a low pvp
population.

Thoddius- This is the kind of pvp I want.....
(taken from ground zero rules on website)
Rules for the South (PvP Zone)
1. This is a full PvP zone. All PvP kills are acceptable here.
This means KOS (kill on sight), explosives, traps, etc. If you
get killed, expect to lose any and all loot that you drop. Don't
get mad if you are killed and when you go back to see if your
backpack is still there, you get killed again.
2. Raiding is permitted here as well. However, only destroy
what is necessary to gain access. This is really the only "rule"
as it pertains to regular raiding because let's face it, you are
just being a complete asshole if you destroy someones base. If
destroying other peoples hard work is what gets you off then I
don't want you here to begin with. Straight up.

I enjoy raiding bases just as much as killing a player.. I think
getting into someones base gets my adrenaline pumping more than
just killing someone.. whether they are off line or not.. you
have to constantly worry that they may log on during your raid
or if they do log on you have to try and kill them from inside
their base.. but at the same time its no fun if you have to
spend 5 hours just breaking into it because the claim are
extremely strong..
