Base Building Question

Spent a lot of time looking but couldn't find anything specific,
so thought I'd ask before the A15 reset:
When base building in the PVP zone (or, I guess, also the PVE
one) is there a requirement that your base be visible?
As in do you have to have a component of your base that is
obviously a base visible at a height where players could expect
to see it, or is it possible to build a base completely
underground save for a hole in the dirt?
A fellow member on the site and I had a discussion about it. He
was pretty sure you needed to have a visible element, but an
exhaustive search of pvp rules hasn't turned up anything.

You Can build however you want. there does not need to be a
visible part of your base.

I think most people start hidden. Then when they have mega
resources they build up , all at once.
This makes it more fun for late game PvP.
But it really does depend on the person.

Wait though, it is true that you can do anything you want, if
you don't intend to raid. The key here is - you have to allow
yourself to be broken into if you are going to break into
someone else's base. Needs to be a two-way street. Same reason
people with bases in the North can't just go south and raid.
I'd say you could argue a point if you have an interestingly
styled base that actually looked like a mountain or something,
but simply creating a hiddy-hole that no one could ever find
would be about the same as having a base in the North, except it
would be less travel for yourself. You'd be able to take
someone else's stuff and never suffer the same danger.
Of course just because you are in the South doesn't mean you
have to raid.
In the Nav map I used to find hiddy-holes by walking around with
a claim block in my hand. When it went red, I had detected
another person's claim block. Then by finding and marking the
corners of the "red zone" you could locate the actual, specific
location of the land claim block and thus go to work. However,
on an infinite map it's just not feasible. Way too much space
involved, but... if a person really wants to, and has an idea
where to start looking, they can still find those "hidden" rebel
bases.

To piggy-back on CM's comment, the other side of the coin is
also true. Sometimes even if my base is in the North I will go
hunt players in the South. I won't raid, though, because I
don't have a base that could be raided in return.

If I PvP my base would be a double secret hidden base. Your
claim block tricks, will not work on me, ha ha ha ha!
