Dedicated Server
Hi. We are having a large influx of new players to our already
very popular 7 Days to Die server. We recently upgraded to the
highest tier you offer, the 40 player. Honestly though, the
server is clearly struggling to keep up and the gameplay is
suffering. I looked on the website and couldn’t find anything,
but do you offer dedicated servers? If so, how much are they
monthly and what are the server and bandwidth specs?
Thank you,
Jahson

Hey there,
I can give you the link to our dedicated server package but
honestly I have to tell you that getting a dedicated box may not
even solve your issues. The game is still early access alpha
stages and it has performance issues. The developers have stated
its truly only optimized for 8 players + zombies. We can
probably try to find you another machine on our network with
less traffic on it but even that may not help. We just cant
guarantee you in any way that the server is going to perform or
be reliable at 40 players.

Let me know how you would like to move forward and we can give
you our best recommendation.

Thank you for the response. Yes, I think it would make sense to
go ahead and have someone investigate the performance issues
first.
I googled and think I found your dedicated servers and it said
they start at $305 per month. That would of course be too
expensive. I have found dedicated server boxes from Fragnet,
Blackbox and GameServers for $110-$115 per month which I might
consider if we cannot improve upon the issue. I don’t know. I
know the game is not optimized very well but some of the other
servers are running the game will fewer issues than ours while
having a similar population. I just need it to work. I had hoped
that upgrading to a 40 player tier would have resulted in better
performance than the previous 32 player tier we were on but
there has not been ANY noticeable improvement, even though our
server almost always has fewer than 32 people playing at any
given time.
Please have someone look into the performance issue for me.
Thank you,
Jahson

jmlufcy,
I could recommend moving you to a machine with an E5-1650 v2 (12
core) 3.5Ghz and an SSD as the machine you are on is only an
E3-1230 v3 (8 core) 3.3Ghz. Other than that, You may need to
consider destroying regions that are not in use so as to reduce
server load. If you are using allocs server fixes and the web
map, you could find out where people mostly gather and remove
regions for the server to rebuild so that they are not loaded
into memory. You’re currently using over 2 to nearly 3 cores
right now out of the 8 on the machine (24 to 34%).

I’m discussing it with my partner right now. I’ll get back to
you in a few minutes with an answer. Seriously, thank you guys
so much for being prompt and attentive. I really appreciate it.

I am checking the other providers right now.
Fragnet only has the $99 server, which will not work in your
case as it is below in spec from the current machine you are
sharing space with currently.

Blockbox is France only.

Okay, we would like to go ahead and move forward with the move
to the better machine you were talking about. What will it take
to get this started?

How much more will it cost?

Gameservers is $153.99/month for this package:
E3-1240 v3
4 Cores x 3.4Ghz w/ HT
32 GB
120 GB SSD
10TB / 10Gbps DDOS Mitigation
1 CPU socket(s)
We’d offer something similar but with a larger HDD. This server
is in NY only.
I believe the option I mentioned earlier would be your best bet
before considering in investing in a machine for a game that is
not designed for what you are doing currently.

jmlufcy,
There would not be any change in cost. The only change would be
a new IP to connect to (possibly a new Port also) and
significant downtime to transfer the server files.

I see. Also, thank you for checking out those other hosts as I
had not known all of that. I have been very happy with you for
over two years now and do not have any desire to leave.
As for the move, can you tell approximately how long the server
would be down and when you would start the process please?

I can start once you reply to the ticket, as far as the down
time goes…
The last server we moved of a size over yours (60GB) took over 8
hours. Your server is currently 47GB in size and is likely to
take 5 to 6 hours.

Okay, so what time zone are you in, and when did they start the
migration?

Thanks for your efforts to improve our server's performance. I
appreciate the great communication about the process.

Looks like a worthwhile move!
Side note* Have you tried to talk to other 7d2d Server Admins on
the other more populated servers and see what host and specs
they use? Just curious what they use in comparison to ours.

Most of them are using servers from Blue Fang Solutions as well.
They are considered one of the top hosts for this game and in my
opinion they are THE top host. They very easily could have tried
to up sell me at any point but instead they were honest and
forthright, informing me that we would not likely see any
benefits by doing more than moving our server to the newer
machine. The game is just overly demanding and poorly optimized.
Also, for everyone's information our server is ranked #2
globally for this game. We have been ranked in the top ten every
single month globally and Number one for private servers for
well over a year now. Currently, the number one ranked server
(Deadlights, which is open public PvE) is also using a server
hosted through Blue Fang Solutions.
