As one or two of you may have noticed I have not played in quite
a while. Well the reason for my absence is my graphics card has
died on me and will no longer play any games. Now why am I
bothering y'all with this? I am hoping someone knows more about
graphics cards than I. I will be in the next month or so be
looking at spending up to $800 on a graphics card and all I know
about them is they cost money. I currently have NVIDIA GeForce
GTX 580 that worked great for the many years I had this
computer. I would love to spend less than $800 but I also don't
want to skimp and regret it later. I play lots of games.
Operating System: Windows 10
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2600K CPU @ 3.40GHz (8 CPUs),
~3.4GHz
Memory: 8192MB RAM

/>( I linked a bells and whistles version)
Tomshardware lists it near the top in current performance:

I've had dual TitanZs so I can't speak much to upgrading!
EVGA has a nice "step-up" program for when you need a new card,
also I used them for years and never had an issue.
