Texas executes convicted killer who was ready to die--
Wednesday, October 5, 2016
HUNTSVILLE, Texas (KWTX) Texas death row inmate Barney Fuller,
Jr., 58, who pleaded guilty to killing a neighbor couple during
a shooting rampage 13 years ago was executed Wednesday evening
in Huntsville.
He asked that no court appeals be pursued in an 11th hour
attempt to save his life and remained adamant that he wanted to
be executed, prison officials said.
Fuller received the lethal injection just after 6 p.m. Wednesday
in Huntsville for the 2003 shooting frenzy that left Nathan
Copeland, 43, and his wife, Annette, 39, dead.
The execution was the seventh of the year in Texas.
Earlier this year, a federal judge ruled that Fuller was
competent to proceed with his execution.
Prison agency spokesman Jason Clark says Fuller was in good
spirits and has said he did not want to talk with his lawyer.
The dispute that led to the deadly shooting grew out of
accusations that Fuller fired shots at the Copelands’ electric
transformer and escalated when Fuller called Annette Copeland
and told her, “Happy New Year, I’m going to kill you.”
Fuller was charged with making a terroristic threat in
connection with the call and was notified of the charge by
letter on May 13, 2003.
At around 1:30 a.m. the next day he went on a shooting rampage
at the Copelands’ home, killing the two adults and wounding the
couple’s 15-year-old son in the shoulder.
He called 911 later that morning and confessed to the killing.
He pleaded guilty to capital murder in July 2014 and after a
punishment hearing, a Houston County jury sentenced him to
death.
