ATLANTA – Georgia has set an execution date later this month
for a man convicted for the 1998 triple murders of a trucking
company owner and his two children.
The Georgia Department of Corrections said in a statement
Thursday that Commissioner Homer Bryson has scheduled Daniel
Anthony Lucas' execution for April 27 at 7 p.m. Georgia executes
inmates using an injection of the barbiturate pentobarbital.
Lucas, who is 37, was convicted in 1999 for the deaths of
37-year-old Steven Moss, his 11-year-old son Bryan and
15-year-old daughter Kristin, who interrupted a burglary at
their home near Macon in central Georgia.
Another man convicted in the murders, Brandon Joseph Rhode, was
put to death in 2010.
Three inmates have been executed this year in Georgia and a
fourth is scheduled to die Tuesday.

ATLANTA (AP) — Georgia plans to carry out its fifth execution of
the year on Wednesday when a man convicted in the 1998 killings
of a trucking company owner and his two children is set to die.
Daniel Anthony Lucas is scheduled to be executed at 7 p.m.
Wednesday at the state prison in Jackson. Georgia executes
inmates by injecting the barbiturate pentobarbital.
Lucas and another man, Brandon Rhode, were searching the Moss
home for valuables in April 1998 when Bryan Moss saw them
through a front window and entered through a back door armed
with a baseball bat, prosecutors have said. They say the two
wrestled Bryan to a chair and Lucas shot him in the shoulder.
Lucas then led the boy to a bedroom and shot him multiple times,
prosecutors have said.
Rhode met Kristin as she got home from school and forced her to
sit on a chair and shot her twice with a pistol, according to
court records.
Rhode then ambushed Steven Moss when he arrived home, shooting
him four times with the same pistol. Lucas later shot the two
children again to make sure they were dead, according to the
records.
Moss' wife, Gerri Ann, discovered the bodies when she returned
home from work.
Only four states have carried out executions this year for a
total of 12. Aside from the four executed in Georgia so far, six
inmates have been put to death in Texas and one each in Alabama
and Florida.

ATLANTA, April 27 (Reuters) - A man described by a prosecutor as
"pure damn evil" for killing two children and their father in
1998 is due to be executed in Georgia on Wednesday.
Daniel Anthony Lucas, 37, confessed to fatally shooting Bryan
Moss, 11, near Macon on April 23, 1998, after the boy arrived
home from school and found Lucas and Brandon Rhode burglarizing
the house, according to court records.
Rhode next shot Bryan's sister, Kristin Moss, 15, and their
father, Steven Moss, 37, when they arrived home, and Lucas then
"shot all three victims again to make sure they were dead,"
Lucas' attorneys wrote in court papers.
Georgia executed Rhode for the murders in 2010. Lucas, who was
convicted of the crimes in 1999, is scheduled to die by lethal
injection at 7 p.m. EST at the state prison in Jackson.
He will be the fifth person executed this year in Georgia and
the 13th in the United States, according to the non-profit Death
Penalty Information Center.
Lucas requested a last meal of meat pizza, steak and cheese
calzone, stuffed Portobello mushroom, chef salad with ranch
dressing and honey mustard dressing, and orange juice, according
to the Georgia Department of Corrections.

JACKSON, Ga. (AP) — Georgia has executed a man convicted in the
April 1998 killings of a trucking company owner and his two
children during a home burglary.
Daniel Anthony Lucas was declared dead at 9:54 p.m. Wednesday at
the state prison in Jackson following a lethal injection. He was
convicted of killing 37-year-old Steven Moss, his 15-year-old
daughter Kristin and his 11-year-old son Bryan, who interrupted
the burglary at their home near Macon. Lucas apologized to the
family of the victims.
Another man convicted in the killings, Brandon Joseph Rhode, was
executed in 2010.
