Rolando Ruiz was convicted in Bexar County in 1995 of being the
       triggerman in the July 14, 1992 murder-for-hire of 29-year-old
Theresa Rodriguez. Rodriguez was shot once in the head in the
garage of her home as she stepped from her car. The victim's
husband, Michael Rodriguez and brother-in-law, Mark Rodriguez,
paid Ruiz $2,000 to kill her, apparently so Michael Rodriguez
could collect on life insurance policies totaling $250,000.
Michael Rodriguez was executed on August 14, 2008 for murdering
Irving Police Officer Aubrey Hawkins, 31, on December 24, 2000
while on escape from the Texas Correctional Connally Unit with
       six other co-defendants.

Texas Hit Man Gets Second Stay Of Execution--
       August 27, 2016
AUSTIN (AP) — A convicted hit man scheduled to be put to death
Wednesday for a murder-for-hire plot that left a woman dead more
than 23 years ago has received a reprieve from a state appeals
court — the second he has received within a week of an execution
       date.
The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals voted 5-2 to issue a stay of
execution Friday in the case of Rolando Ruiz. Presiding Judge
Sharon Keller and Judge Michael Keasler dissented without
comment. Judges Barbara Hervey and Kevin Yeary did not
       participate in the ruling.
Ruiz, 44, had gotten within an hour of a lethal injection in
2007 when a federal appeals court intervened.
Evidence showed Ruiz collected $2,000 to kill Theresa Rodriguez
of San Antonio in 1992 at the request of her husband, Michael,
and a brother-in-law in a life insurance scheme. Michael
Rodriguez also wound up on death row as one of the notorious
Texas Seven gang of escaped inmates. He was executed in 2008...

Hit Man Executed for Texas Murder--
He charged $2K for 1992 slaying
       Tuesday, March 7, 2017
A paid hit man was executed Tuesday night in Texas for gunning
down a San Antonio woman in a life insurance scheme 25 years
ago. Rolando Ruiz was given a lethal injection for fatally
shooting Theresa Rodriguez, 29, outside her home in 1992 as she
was getting out of a car with her husband and brother-in-law,
who both orchestrated her murder, the AP reports. Ruiz was paid
$2,000 to carry out the killing. Ruiz, strapped to the Texas
death chamber gurney, looked directly at two sisters of his
victim and their husbands and apologized profusely. "Words
cannot begin to express how sorry I am and the hurt I have
caused you and your family," he told them. "May this bring you
       peace and forgiveness."
His execution was delayed for nearly five hours until the U.S.
Supreme Court rejected three appeals."It's not going to bring
her back, so it really doesn't mean very much," Susie Sanchez,
whose daughter was killed in the contract murder, said Monday.
After the murder, the victim's husband and brother-in-law
accepted life terms in plea deals. Brother-in-law Mark Rodriguez
was paroled in 2011 but husband Michael Rodriguez later joined
Ruiz on death row as one of the notorious Texas 7, a group of
seven inmates who escaped from a South Texas prison in 2000 and
killed a Dallas-area police officer. He was executed in 2008. He
blamed his infatuation with a younger woman for the murder plot.
