The Missouri Supreme Court on Thursday set an execution date for
the killer of a deputy sheriff and two other people in 2002.
Earl M. Forrest, now 66, was sentenced to death after he was
convicted of three counts of first-degree murder in Dent County
in south-central Missouri. The case was tried in Platte County
on a change of venue.
Forrest’s execution, set for May 11, is the first scheduled in
Missouri this year.
According to court documents, Forrest got into a dispute with a
woman over a business deal for her to buy a lawn mower and
mobile home for him. He shot and killed her and a man who was at
her residence.
He took $25,000 worth of methamphetamine from her home and
returned to his own home, where he got into a shootout that
killed Deputy Sheriff Joann Barnes. Forrest and the county
sheriff were wounded in the exchange of gunfire.
In Thursday’s execution order, the court noted that all of
Forrest’s appeals in state and federal courts have been denied
and last October the U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear his
case.

Ex-drug dealer who killed best friend and policewoman in dispute
over LAWNMOWER to be executed tomorrow--

A former drug dealer who gunned down his best friend, her guest
and a police officer in a dispute over a lawnmower will be
executed tomorrow.
Earl Forrest went to Harriet Smith’s home after a drinking
session and demanded she buy him the gardening equipment and a
mobile home after he introduced her to a source for crystal
meth.
A struggle ensued and Forrest, 65, shot a guest of Smith's,
Michael Wells, in the face, killing him.
Forrest, of Platte County, Missouri, USA, also killed Smith by
shooting her six times - and has since blamed her for the
shooting.
He then stole crystal meth worth £17,000 and fled to his home,
where he got into a shootout with police officers.
Forrest shot Chief Deputy Joann Barnes and Sheriff Bob Wofford
in the struggle and also fired at his own girlfriend, Angela
Gamblin.
Deputy Barnes died from her injuries.
Forrest was friends with Ms Smith, who he called ‘Tottie', for
30 years but has expressed no remorse over his crimes - and even
blames her for the incident.
“I’m still mad at Tottie,” Forrest said, during an interview for
the A&E TV series ‘A Killer Speaks’.
“She should have kept her word and done what she promised. Then
everyone would be happy and alive.”
Forrest also admitted that he is dangerous and uses violence
when he feels he has been wronged.
According to court documents, he was charged with three counts
of first-degree murder, and the jury found him guilty on all
three counts.
The jury subsequently recommended a death sentence for each of
the three murders.

A man who killed two people in a drug dispute and a sheriff's
deputy in a subsequent shootout was put to death Wednesday in
what could be Missouri's last execution for some time.
Earl Forrest died by injection for the December 2002 deaths of
Harriett Smith, Michael Wells and Dent County Sheriff's Deputy
JoAnn Barnes. The 66-year-old Forrest declined to make a final
statement.
As his execution began, he mouthed words to his adult daughter
who was among the witnesses. He stopped speaking within seconds
of being injected with a lethal dose of pentobarbital, but
showed no outward signs of distress.
He was pronounced dead minutes later.
'We know this execution will not bring JoAnn back, but it
destroyed an evil person that otherwise would be still walking
this earth,' the deputy's family members said in a statement in
which they also described Barnes as a pillar of her rural
community and a major influence in establishing a fire
department there and later serving as its chief.
The execution was delayed about an hour, partly because of
severe weather in the area. Tornado sirens sounded at one point.
Just hours before the scheduled execution, the U.S. Supreme
Court and Democratic Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon declined to stop
it.
Nixon denied a clemency request, and the high court refused to
grant a stay of execution.
Nixon said in a statement: 'The clemency petition for Earl M.
Forrest has been reviewed thoroughly, and I have subsequently
received a final briefing from my counsel.
'After deliberate consideration to the merits of the petition
and the facts of this case, I have denied this petition.
'This is a power of the Governor that I take very seriously, and
great consideration is given to the specific facts of each case.
'Earl Forrest was convicted by a jury of murdering three people
and sentenced to death on each count.
'My decision today upholds the decision handed down by the jury
and upheld by the state and federal courts.
'As preparations are made to carry out the sentence, I ask that
Missourians remember Chief Deputy Barnes, Harriett Smith and
Michael Wells at this time and keep their families in their
thoughts and prayers.'
