A man convicted of killing and sexually assaulting a teenage
girl and another woman in separate South Florida attacks in 1984
is set to be executed next month under a death warrant signed
Tuesday by Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis.
Duane Owen's execution is set for June 15 at 6 p.m. It's the
fourth execution scheduled in Florida this year after a break
dating back to 2019. Donald Dillbeck was executed in February,
and Louis Bernard Gaskin was executed in April. Darryl B.
Barwick was executed earlier this month.
The execution would be only the sixth under DeSantis, a far
slower pace than recent Florida governors — and ahead of his
       widely expected presidential campaign.
According to court records, Owen broke into a Delray Beach home
in March 1984 and attacked 14-year-old Karen Slattery, who was
babysitting two young children. Owen repeatedly stabbed the girl
and then sexually assaulted her, investigators said. The young
       children weren't injured.
About two months later, Georgianna Worden, 38, was sleeping in
her Boca Raton home when Owen broke in and fatally struck her in
the head with a hammer multiple times before raping her,
       officials said.
Delray Beach and Boca Raton are both in Palm Beach County, about
50 miles (80 kilometers) north of Miami.
Owen is also accused of attacking two other women in their
       homes, but they survived.

Florida Set to Execute Hammer Killer Who r*p*d Women--
       Wednesday, June 14th, 2023
Florida is set to execute a man sentenced to death for the
murders of a teenage girl and another woman in separate attacks
       in 1984.
Duane Eugene Owen, 62, is scheduled to die by lethal injection
       at 6 p.m. on Thursday.
Owen broke into a home in Delray Beach on March 24, 1984, and
attacked 14-year-old Karen Slattery, who was babysitting two
young children. According to court records, Owen repeatedly
stabbed Slattery and then sexually assaulted her. The children
       were not injured.
Then in May that year, Owen murdered Georgianna Worden, 38. She
had been sleeping when he broke into her Boca Raton home and
struck her in the head with a hammer multiple times before
       raping her, authorities said.
According to court records, he also attacked other women in
their homes in Palm Beach County in the 1980's.
Slattery's sister, Debbi Johnson, has said she is glad that Owen
will soon be put to death. She was 10 when her sister was
       murdered.
"I don't think there's anything that I could say or he could say
that would make a difference," she told the South Florida Sun
Sentinel. "I don't forgive him. At all."
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis temporarily stayed Owen's execution
date in May and appointed a commission of experts to evaluate
his competency. He later dissolved the stay, saying the
psychiatrists had concluded that Owen "has the mental capacity
to understand the nature of the death penalty and the reasons
why it is to be imposed upon him."
Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody urged the high court to
       allow the execution to proceed.
"This continued recycling of the same suspect and incredible
facts to support a stay would be a gross miscarriage of justice
and would amount to a commutation of his death sentences for the
duration of the stay," Moody wrote. "Owen is not entitled to any
       further review."
Owen's execution is the fourth scheduled in Florida this year.

Florida man executed for 1984 killings of teen babysitter, mom
       of 2 slain months apart--
Authorities say 62-year-old Duane Owen was pronounced dead at
6:14 p.m. Thursday after a lethal injection at Florida State
       Prison in Starke.
       Thursday, June 15th, 2023
STARKE — A Florida man was executed Thursday for killing a
14-year-old babysitter and a 38-year-old mother of two in
separate attacks months apart in 1984 while children were
sleeping in the homes he targeted.
Duane Owen was pronounced dead at 6:14 p.m. after a lethal
injection at Florida State Prison, according to Gov. Ron
DeSantis’ office. One of Florida’s longest-held death row
inmates, Owen was 23 at the time of the attacks and 62 when he
       was executed.
Owen declined to make a final statement. The procedure began at
6:01 p.m., with Owen’s arms twitching and his breathing becoming
heavier as the sedative took effect. The warden made sure Owen
was unconscious before lethal drugs were administered.
Several family members of the victims witnessed the execution.
No one in the witness room spoke.

Of the more than 290 people on Florida’s death row, Owen was one
       of the longest held there.
