TALLAHASSEE — In what could be Florida’s third execution in less
than three months, Gov. Ron DeSantis on Monday signed a death
warrant for a man convicted of murdering a Bay County woman in
       1986.
Darryl Barwick, now 56, is scheduled to be executed May 3 at
Florida State Prison, according to documents posted late Monday
on the Florida Supreme Court website.
Barwick was sentenced to death in the March 31, 1986, stabbing
death of Rebecca Wendt, who was found wrapped in a comforter in
her Panama City apartment, according to court documents. Wendt
       was stabbed 37 times.
A 1995 Florida Supreme Court decision said Barwick had seen
Wendt sunbathing at the apartment complex and, after getting a
knife, followed her into the apartment. He was also found guilty
of armed burglary, attempted sexual battery, and armed robbery.
Barwick was initially sentenced to death in 1987, but the
Florida Supreme Court overturned the conviction and ordered a
new trial. He was convicted again in 1992 and was sentenced to
death after a unanimous jury recommendation, according to a
document from Attorney General Ashley Moody’s office that was
filed Monday at the Supreme Court.
State and federal courts have rejected a series of appeals by
       Barwick.

Florida to Execute Darryl Barwick for Brutal Murder of Woman in
       1986--
       Monday, May 1st, 2023
Florida is set to execute a man convicted of breaking into a
woman's apartment in 1986 and brutally murdering her.
Darryl B. Barwick, 56, is set to be executed on May 3 at 6 p.m.
for the murder of 24-year-old Rebecca Wendt.
Florida's Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis signed Barwick's death
       warrant earlier this month.
Barwick's execution is set to go ahead after the Florida Supreme
Court on Friday rejected an appeal from his attorneys, who
argued that the execution should be halted because of his
lifelong mental illness and intellectual disability.
Barwick's attorney has filed a petition with the U.S. Supreme
Court seeking to halt the execution.
According to court records, Wendt had been sunbathing at her
apartment complex in Panama City on the morning of March 31,
       1986.
When she later returned to her apartment, Barwick followed her
       inside and attacked her.
Wendt's sister, who was also her roommate, returned to her
apartment that night to find her body wrapped in a comforter.
Investigators found bloody footprints and fingerprints in the
apartment, and an autopsy determined that Wendt had been stabbed
37 times. There was no evidence of sexual assault, but medical
examiners reported finding semen on the comforter that she was
       wrapped in.
Barwick was arrested on April 15 and confessed to the murder. He
told investigators that he entered the apartment with the
intention of robbing Wendt and only stabbed her after she
       resisted.
Tests conducted on the semen left on the comforter showed that
Barwick was within 2 percent of the population that could have
       left it.
Barwick was convicted of first-degree murder, armed burglary,
attempted sexual battery, and armed robbery following a trial in
November 1986. He was sentenced to death following the jury's
       9-3 recommendation.
Barwick's execution is the third scheduled in Florida this
year—Donald Dillbeck was executed on February 23, and Louis
Gaskin was executed on April 12.
Earlier this month, DeSantis signed a bill ending a unanimous
jury requirement in death penalty sentencing. The governor had
pushed for the legislation after a divided jury spared Parkland
school shooter Nikolas Cruz from execution last year.
Florida had required a unanimous jury vote for capital
punishment since 2017, but the new law allows capital punishment
in the state with a jury recommendation of at least 8-4 in favor
       of execution.
"Once a defendant in a capital case is found guilty by a
unanimous jury, one juror should not be able to veto a capital
sentence," DeSantis said in a statement. "I'm proud to sign
legislation that will prevent families from having to endure
what the Parkland families have and ensure proper justice will
be served in the state of Florida."

Darryl Barwick was 19 when he brutally stabbed a sunbather. He
       faces justice 36 years later.--
       April 26th, 2023
In 1986, Darryl Barwick was 19 years old when prosecutors say he
saw a pretty, young woman sunbathing by the pool of her
apartment complex in Panama City and followed her home.
Prosecutors say he had been watching her and went back to his
house nearby to grab a knife and gloves before returning to
       24-year-old Rebecca Wendt’s apartment.
Wendt and her sister, Michael Ann, had moved to the Florida
Panhandle from Huron, Ohio. Michael Ann Wendt returned home from
working in Fort Walton Beach that day in March to find her
sister’s bloody, bathing suit-clad body wrapped in her bedroom
comforter and left in the bathtub. She had been stabbed 37
       times.
Now 56, Barwick has been on death row for 36 years, and he is
scheduled for execution May 3 after Gov. Ron DeSantis signed his
       death warrant on April 4.

Jim Harvey said: 1986? 37 years in prison on death row? The
taxpayers have supported this thug for 37 years and NOW he's
about to have his sentence FINALLY carried out? What is wrong
with the criminal justice system? No deterrent for violent
       capitol crimes.
My reply to Jim Harvey was: I don't mind that it has taken so
long. You think he was having some kind of picnic for those 37
years? Believe me he suffered-- they all do, but they deserve to
suffer. How do I know that to be true? I wrote with a condemned
killer for over 4 years back in the 1980's. He sat down in the
hot seat on November 7th, 1988. Jeffery Joseph Daugherty, 33,
was cooked Medium well in this Sunshine state's electric chair.
We didn't have the needle yet so his execution was the one just
before Ted Bundy's was. Jeff was Age 20 when he did his 6
murders in several states. That was back in 1976. He killed in
Florida, Pennsylvania, & Alabama and armed robbed in Texas and
most all the other states on the route heading back North. He
was finally stopped after his capture in Virginia. Virginia sent
him to Pennsylvania's Death Row but they refused to schedule an
execution so Florida stepped in and we promised to kill him if
they sent him down to us. And so they did, and we did! LoL!
       🤣🤣🤣
