Georgia set to execute man convicted of murdering off-duty
prison guard--
Friday, May 4th, 2018
ATLANTA (Reuters) - Georgia is scheduled on Friday to execute a
man convicted of stealing a car from an off-duty prison guard he
met at a WalMart in 1996 and murdering him with a blast to the
head from a sawed-off shotgun.
Robert Butts Jr., 40, is scheduled to die by lethal injection at
7 p.m. at the Georgia Diagnostic and Classification Center in
Jackson. If the execution is carried out, he will be the 10th
inmate put to death this year in the United States.
The execution was originally scheduled for Thursday but the
Georgia State Board of Pardons and Paroles issued a stay on
Wednesday to consider the case further. Late on Thursday, the
board lifted the stay, allowing the execution to proceed.
Butts was convicted of murdering Donovan Parks southeast of
Atlanta, according to court records.
Butts and an accomplice, Marion Wilson, carjacked Parks and
Wilson pulled the victim by his tie out of the car and onto the
pavement. Butts then shot him in the head, the records said.
The two tried to sell the car at an illegal shop in Atlanta that
strips down vehicles, but were turned down. Afterward, they set
fire to the car, court records said.
The state of Georgia has argued that he was duly convicted and
deserves to die for his role in the brutal killing.
Wilson was also sentenced to death for his role in the killing
and is appealing his case.

Georgia Supreme Court rejects stay of execution for Robert Earl
Butts--
Inmate scheduled to die tonight by lethal injection for 1996
murder
Friday, May 4, 2018
JACKSON, GA — Georgia death row inmate Robert Earl Butts Jr.
continues to await execution tonight at the Georgia Diagnostic
and Classification Prison.
Although the lethal injection was scheduled for 7 p.m., Georgia
will not proceed until all courts have weighed in on last-minute
appeals for mercy — which usually pushes the actual hour of
punishment late into the night.
The Supreme Court of Georgia this afternoon unanimously denied a
stay of execution for Butts.
Butts, 40, was sentenced to death for the March 1996 murder of
Donovan Corey Parks in Milledgeville. Butts and his
co-defendant, Marion Wilson Jr., asked Parks for a ride from a
local Walmart store and later ordered him from the car and shot
him in the head. Butts was 18 at the time.
In addition to denying Butts’ motion for a stay of execution,
the state Supreme Court denied his request to appeal rulings by
the Butts County Superior Court and the Baldwin County Superior
Court, which both issued an order denying a stay and rejecting
Butts’ challenge to his death sentence.
If he is executed, Butts will be the second man Georgia has put
to death this year.

Georgia executes killer of off-duty prison guard--
Saturday, May 5, 2018
JACKSON, GA-- A Georgia inmate executed for a 1996 shotgun
slaying groaned and twitched briefly as the lethal injection
flowed into his body.
Forty-year-old Robert Earl Butts Jr. was declared dead by a
prison warden at 9:58 p.m. Friday after the compounded
barbiturate pentobarbital was injected into his body. Prison
officials said he had declined to take a sedative.
Strapped to a gurney with his arms out to his sides, Butts kept
his eyes closed throughout the procedure. A tube that delivered
the killing drug through a wall appeared to pulse soon after the
warden left the death chamber at 9:42.
"It burns, man," Butts said in a low voice. Those were his final
words.
