'It's heaven being a Dingle!' - Old Interview

EMMERDALE'’s Joseph Gilgun who plays lovable rogue Eli
Dingle is delighted to be getting his second bite of soap fame.
Joseph, 22, got his first taste when he was only 10 playing
Jamie Armstrong, son of Tricia Armstrong played by Tracey Brabin
in Coronation Street.
However, the bubble burst and when he left Corrie at 13 he gave
up acting for a while as he had become typecast and struggled
academically because of his dyslexia ending up working as a
plasterer and general labourer.
He told us: “When I was a kid on Corrie I didn’t
realise how good a life I had until I left. I had some bad times
before I joined Emmerdale last year.”
The actor has become a firm favourite as villainous Eli who is
always getting into some kind of scrape. On Wednesday, he’s
in cowboy builder mode as he decides to help Marlon and Donna
with the work at their home.
Unfortunately, while driving a JCB he manages to hit a water
main and causes a flood resulting in huge damage.
Joseph said: “Eli’s a twerp. He’s a rough
diamond, a lovable rogue who is a product of his environment.
He’s a crook who has spent time in jail for selling hard
drugs. He can get away with things, as he can never admit that
he’s wrong.
“I could have ended up like him if I hadn’t got a grip
on myself.”
One of the worst times was when Joseph was at school. He
recalled: “Because of my dyslexia I failed most of my GCSEs
apart from the arts subjects where I got A*s. Other subjects I
got Fs. I got into university to study fashion but I left after
a year, as it was all too academic.
Digger dilemma ... Eli Dingle in trouble
“It’s because people with dyslexia and Attention
Deficit Disorder make up for their problems by being creative in
other ways.”
Eli’s botched building work reminds Joseph of one
particular tragedy which he witnessed when he worked on building
sites.
He said: “I was on one site when there were no acting jobs
and I hadn’t even started work when a guy was carried out
with a punctured lung.
“He had fallen into a large trench and landed on a piece of
metal which had ripped his chest. He suffered internal bleeding
and died. It was awful. It’s definitely safer being an
actor but it can be just as eventful.”
Joseph admits that he’s a practical joker on the Emmerdale
set, adding: “The others worry about me being prankster as
I’m not the most professional of people and I like to have
a joke and a laugh.
“I’ve given the crew kittens by pretending to reverse
a van with a camera strapped to the side of it into a wall. The
next thing I was banned from driving the van. I also loved
driving the JCB as I’ve done that before when I worked on a
farm.
“I haven’t passed my test so I can only drive on
private roads. I need to find some time to take some lessons.
“
Because of his madcap character, Joseph has been getting plenty
of fan mail. He laughed: “I do get letters from lasses but
I don’t think they fancy Eli as he’s not much of a
heart throb.
“They all prefer Cain Dingle. So no marriage proposals for
me. The best I could manage was a bizarre request from a guy who
wanted to ravish me like a mad dog!”
Joseph will show a different side to his acting when his film
This Is England about a group of 1980s skinheads living in
Thatcher’s Britain is released on April 26.
He added: “It was made before I joined Emmerdale and
I’m very proud of it. I play Woody the leader of a skinhead
gang. It won best film at the British Independent Film Awards in
November beating The Queen and The Last King Of Scotland which
can’t be bad.”
Clearly enjoying the security of working on Emmerdale as one of
the Dingle clan, he beamed: “I love the fact that I’m
coming home from work full of beans. I’m really enjoying my
time on the show and long may it continue. There’s lots
going on for Eli. No doubt he will be getting up to plenty of
stupidity this year.”
