Oil Pan Seal Replacement
By: justinb Date: January 13, 2013, 8:30 pm

I plan on changing out my oil pan gasket soon, it's beginning to
drip and the gasket has swollen up. It's seems like a pretty
easy repair. Any tips or best practices to help make the job
easier? It's a 2000 Sport 4.0L

Jack up the front end by the frame to gain extra clearence in
regards to the axle. Let the engine warm up before you drain
the oil, it will make the oil drain faster and you'll get more
out so less will be dripping on you. Wear mechanics gloves,
they do help more than most people think. Make sure you get all
the old gasket material off or it will leak.

Thanks, do you think I should go ahead and repace the rear main
seal while I've got the pan off?

[/quote] It depends on how much extra and what condition its in.
If it's not much then I'd say go ahead and do preventative
maintenance especially if you have high mileage.

I'd replace the rear main. Just did mine this past weekend. It
was a pita but it is that preventive maintenance that will save
you down the road. Might look at the oil pump when your in
there. Its only 2 more bolts.
