Dear Ivory:
The degree that all this adventure is difficult is directly
related to the degree that we cling to things, concepts, ideas
and people. This is where the practice of letting go can be
useful.
Letting go is not what we are taught because much of our early
learning was mirroring parents. All parents are terrible at
parenting because were have never been taught to be parents,
they learn when it is too late. Not their fault, just the way it
is. So in the end, you have to grow up and be your own parent,
parent yourself, guide yourself.
Start small with some little thing and just ask yourself if you
could let go of it, whatever that might look, feel or sound like
to you. Sometimes it helps to take a breath in and hold it for a
minute and then ask if you can let go of the sticky thought and
release the breath. Try it and see how it feels, but small
things only for starters.
Love ya, Jed.

I'm not sure what small looks like to you, but there are three
things in my sights:
- nicotine
- wanting more friends
- pretty girls
The first one I tried to quit today, but I cheated 3 times
today. This is the one I really want to let go of.

Your trying to quit things and thinking you should love people,
etc. is all symptomatic and surface structure.
Forget about quitting smoking and loving people. They may or may
not come of the own accord. You can't get T/R by practicing the
assumed symptoms of it.
Be patient with yourself.
Love ya, Jed.

I definitely thought that about the smoking thing.
There are a lot of emotions lingering, and that right now, is
driving everything I do.
I've gotten better at seeing it, but sometimes there's no way in
hell.
So, you think smoking will stop by its own accord?
The main reason I want to quit smoking is because I can't ever
feel content when I'm craving nicotine and feeling anxious.

In my experience that's the way it happens, or you get hit by a
truck. That'll end it also.
Love ya, Jed.

Yeah, I guess I should have asked myself that. There was never
any trying. Just a spontaneous decision. Never been hit by a
truck :)

I put way to much attention on my thoughts this weekend. Is
there a way to check out what's going on up there without
reinforcing it? The analysis spiked way more than usual.
I know if I breath the analysis will all fall away. But this was
like 1 step forward, 3 steps back.
Should I ditch writing entirely?
EDIT: I'm not sure I want to do that yet actually. I'm still
curious to explore a little bit. Not too much though.

Hmm... Well, I think I found a more direct way of breaking
attachment. I used to get caught up in desires, then spend a
couple days coming back to clarity.
No!
I think that attachments strengthen just by entertaining
thought. You break attachment all day long simply by ignoring
thought all day long. Pleasant thought is especially addicting.
And, when there is a sense of self, you look for it. "Well,
right now it feels like there is a 'me', what is this? Is there
a me here experiencing this pleasant thought, or are there just
sensations, thoughts, and images?"
You have to ruthlessly pull attention away from thought from the
moment you wake up till the end of the day. Breath, notice,
breath, notice.
What I noticed today was a less cluttered mind. I'm going to
play with this some more and see.
