Reporting back. I tried both. Breathing is calming and soothing.
Helps slow the mind down a bit and ease some of the frantic
stuff the mind is throwing at me. I'm going through a lot of
emotions right now. It's been like a nuclear bomb for the past
year.
I can't say much about awareness of sights, sounds, and
sensations. It's really hard to get into the senses right now.
Maybe it's better to do this when the mind is clear?
I think I just want to focus on breathing right now.
Your thoughts?

The last few days were a doozie! Phew.
Spent a couple hours with the breath yesterday and today I am
grateful to be alive.
I've noticed this pattern and it's interesting how it happens.
The mundane always sets me straight.

So the mundane polishes down desires/attachments. This takes
care of a lot of the mind's scatter.
I know this is important because wanting is time, essentially.
In the absence of wanting, it's easier to stay grounded in the
present moment (seeing, hearing, feeling).
I know this, but I tend to oscillate back and forth between
contentedness and hoping/wanting. I wonder why I don't remain
content.
Is because of the emotional crap I'm working through. Or because
of indulgence. Perhaps both?

That last post wasn't complete. There is fear, which is the fear
of loss, which is attachment to ideas in time.
Non-indulgence in desire allows those attachments to dissolve by
being with the fear (which feels like losing or relinquishing
control).
We don't actually lose anything, we just break attachment and
give up control. Thy will be done, sorta thing.
Does this match your experience, Jed? Or am I hallucinating?

I see now. The questions define the next thing I need to let go
of. They are the next step. The context of the questions tells
me I need to let go of attachment to thinking (ignore content of
mind, shift into senses) and let go of vices I use to mask
unpleasant emotion.
PS. I wish you woulda told me long ago I was already
hallucinating. Coulda saved a lot of money on LSD back in the
day :-\
I'm already trippin'? Far out man.
