The Illusion of Choice

Hey Jed,
I have been on the awakening path for some time now and have
surrendered the idea of a separate self completely. However, I
have been stuck on the issue of free will for some time. It just
doesn't make sense. For example, you write on the forum that a
seeker should avoid the distractions of sex, drugs, and
chocolate. That seems fine in of itself, but it directly
contradicts your assertion that there is no one who has free
will or even exists! If there is no one who has free will, how
can one be seen to have the choice between distracting
themselves or not? And who is distracting who? If there is no
one in truth, then such issues as distraction don't arise. The
reason I bring up distraction is because it is very relevant to
my "journey". I love smoking weed, but I don't know if its
distracting me from truth. Obviously, truth comes first and I
would give up weed in a heartbeat if needed. But if I don't
exist, how can I give it up? Should I give it up? How do I
reconcile all this with the truth of no-self and no free will?
I'm debating whether to give up weed like I have a choice, and
it seems like I have a choice, but do I really? ??? ??? ???
Very confused,
Don't know who I am

Dear Q:
I don't recall saying avoid sex, drugs and chocolate. I may have
said that they are avoidance strategies/tools, but don't recall
saying avoid them. It's a good idea to avoid avoidance though.
But stop for a moment... that's not really important. What is
really important is you should NOT give up smoking weed. You
should smoke all the weed you can get and more. Smoke it until
you feel like you have been tied to the blades of a helicopter
that's hovering over Everest. You know that you don't want to
quit it so why bother. Smoke you ass off. Who cares?
In between smoking you should indulge in all the sex, drugs and
chocolate you can get you mitts on.
Please don't laugh at this, it's a serious matter and I am not
joking. It's deadly serious.
Love ya, Jed.

Wow... not the advice I was expecting... :o :o Is the reason
I should keep smoking weed because quitting wouldn't be a real
decision? I would still mentally want to smoke if I quit now so
I should just smoke, smoke, and smoke some more until I'm all
smoked out and genuinely don't want to anymore? Is that what
you're getting at Jed? I do have the sense that eventually I
won't find weed enjoyable anymore. It has become less and less
pleasurable lately.
btw still don't know how I could choose to smoke or not smoke if
I don't exist... :-\

When it's time to quit, if ever, it will come on it's own. All
your efforting will backfire. So, screw it, be the world's best
stoner. Don't every think about quiting. Try choosing to smoke
like the current bush fires in Northern Alberta. It's mostly
weed burning up there anyways.
CHOOSE TO SMOKE... Bob wants you to, Trudeau would want you to,
I want you to, you want you to... don't pussy foot around, get
good and f-ed up.No time like the present, pass that bong.
(interesting ''bong'' in Cambodian means ''brother''). Your bong
is your brother.
Love ya, Jed.

so here's where I'm at right now Jed: the body/mind organism
that I think I am occurs in unchanging, eternal Consciousness,
which is all there is. To use an analogy, the body/mind is like
a flute that the musician (Consciousness) plays. The problem
occurs when the flute thinks that it is the one who makes the
music. The flute tries to control and artificially alter the
music because it thinks that it is the composer. But it's really
the musician who is blowing the flute, the flute has no control
at all! So the flute is the instrument that the musician uses to
make the wonderful symphony of life and the flute can't do
anything except be played by the musician and enjoy the show.
The flute thinks that it can choose things, but it's really the
musician all along. Does this analogy make sense Jed?

Jed I know that you're not consistent in any way (hobgoblin of
little minds and all that) and I shouldn't take anything you say
seriously, but is there a reason that you told me that I should
keep smoking weed? You've told many people on the forum to stop
smoking weed.

seems to be one of your favorite quotes... so kind of
confused... I honestly thought you would tell me to stop
smoking. I kind of know I'm going to stop soon, it's just a
matter of when. It doesn't feel right anymore. I'm probably
reading way to into this but I would appreciate a straight
answer Jed...
