Jed Rant... well, not really...

Dear Members:
I'm doing a little catch up work and it occurred to me that two
'thank yous' were in order.
First of all, thank you for being patient and adhering to the
forum rules in my absence. I am very busy and keeping things
orderlyness is definitely not my strong point. Much appreciated.
Second, a number of members and students offered financial
assistance for my little UXO expedition. As it worked out, we
were sufficiently funded already but I want to express my
gratitude for your thoughts and offers.
Now, back to work.. so, let me make a recommendation. I have
mentioned him before but some members may not have heard of him
or his work.
About 20 years ago I spend time with a wonderful British fellow,
Douglas Harding. He has since passed away and was about 80 years
old at the time of our meeting. The focus of his writing was
''headlessness'' and his main book, at least the one that I
enjoyed the most is ''On Being Headless''.
How about using this thread for a discussion of his work. I
invite your comments and experiences on being headless.
Love ya, Jed.

"when Harding says "I have no head" he's more concerned with the
"I" than the "head". This sense we have of being a separate
self, living in our heads, is the cause of all our woes: stress
and sadness and relationship troubles all result from how the
self interacts with other selves. It's fundamental to all
experience. Yet when we turn our attention directly to where we
assume it's located, just behind the eyes, it's unclear what's
there, or even what "there" might mean. The "I" that has a head
doesn't appear to be a locatable, examinable thing at all. Which
is weird – right?"
Sounds familiar. Right here, right now...I can't see myself
either. Is that me in the mirror? Prove it!
What's up with that?!!

I haven't read Harding, and I don't read much anymore these
days, but I did have an experience.
The last few day I have had am extremely painful back-pain, so
much that at times I needed to lay down on the floor hoping the
pain would go... until I started laughing real loud, because I
actually experienced that I was not this body in pain. There was
a body, and it was in extreme pain, and I experienced it, but it
had nothing to do with "me".
So, in reply to the headless me, I don't even have a body... I
guess the ego has left its building (the body) and "I" (that
which I am in Truth) experiences the body in an impersonal way.
There is a body and it has back-pain and I am experiencing it,
but it is not MY back-pain and "I" am not effected by it.

Haven't read him either, though it sounds interesting.
Still got plenty of occasions where this so called seperate "I"
has struggles communicating with the "I" of someone else. How
does one account for the invisible mind of others, whereas all
the seperate "I"s have a different mind. Or is this just
game/play from maya? These seperate I's have different
experiences, so it seems. Then again, all that's right here are
the feelings of this body right here. For whatever is known, it
cannot be confirmed there is an actual body writing down
anything at the other side, or those have feelings. Any opinion
about this is irrelevant, it is what it is.
Anyway, I'll take a look at the headless way. :) Thanks!

You can't experience your head directly. But you also experience
nothing else directly.
Its all in your head ...but maybe I'm in your head...

I read Douglas Harding a number of years ago and remember
thinking, What the first thing that may be recognised when there
is an experience of what may be true. If what we take ourselves
to be is nothing but a state of mind, and when all states of
mind drop or fall away, then the first recognition may be the
dropping of what the predominant state of me was. If I justified
myself firstly as a body, then the main thing recognised is I am
not, and in an abstract way, as a way of recognising that, it
disappears. Dont know.
In my experience, recognition, or a basic understanding came, as
a me not being the doer, or I had nothing to do with what
appeared to be happening.

If im correct. I think he discussed the multiple ways on
approaching yourself. I find it somehow fascinating to think
about the smallest particle possible. And keep on deviding it.
Until you have really the smallest particle. Which of course..
Isnt possible. For the core is hollow. I also like to think
about the size of the universe.. And think about wether it is
boundless or not. It makes things very clear.. Its so obvious..

I've one across Douglas Harding's name a few times so when you
mentioned him, Jed, I had a look at some of his writings on his
website.
I found this one very, very helpful. It's worth doing a few
times at least (imho)...

Thanks for the reference, Jed.

By the way Jed, I think you're awesome! There might not be a
"you" and whatevs, but I think it's amazing what you're doing
for "people". ;D
Whatever ego there may or may not be, I'm gonna stroke it. :P
;)
Love, Mori

Somebody mentioned in this thread "his website". If Harding has
been dead for about 20 years, then perhaps the stuff on 'his
website' may not be actually 'his'....unless quoted of course.
Just saying :)
N. mentions Harding in 'I Am That'.
Jed, Do you know what their relationship was?
Thanks.
