Breathing Well Contemplation
By: Jed McKenna Date: July 26, 2021, 6:12 am

Here is a recording of Jed’s Full Body Breathing contemplation.
If you are already a champion breather, you may not need these
fundamentals. Even so, you might approach this practice with
“beginner’s lungs”. This, and the text version of it below,
guide you through the basic practice you’ll want to have
well-integrated in order to work with Jed’s Dying Well
contemplation, which I’ll post shortly. - Zara

As most of you probably realize, humans are generally not very
competent when it comes to the first thing we ever did following
our exit from the womb…. i.e., took a breath. From that point
on, most of us gradually slipped into a pattern of breathing
dominated by our most chronic state. If you are in
fear/anticipation much of the time, you will breath high in your
chest and more frequently. That also applies if you are
particularly visually oriented. If you tend towards the lazy
side of life, frequently the kinesthetic type, you will breathe
more slowly and lower in your body. Granted, we seem to breathe
well enough to get by, but I’m not big on just getting by. There
is a better way. Don’t just do each step only once and think you
have it. I suggest practicing each of these steps for at least a
few days before the final integration.
[li]Until full body breathing becomes an unconscious habit, you
need to do it lying down. Don’t be surprised if you slip into a
deep and restful sleep initially.[/li]
[li]Start by isolating your breathing to just your stomach. The
lower in your torso the better. Imagine you have a big beer
belly (yes, not that attractive, but no one will see you). With
every in-breath you expand only your lower belly and push your
exhalation out by drawing your belly in.[/li]
[li]Now, breathe only into the opposite location, your lower
back. Do your best to relax your belly and just use the
expansion and contraction of your back to breathe. This will
probably be challenging in the beginning, but it’s certainly
doable.[/li]
[li]Next we expand into your ribs. Relax the belly and back
while breathing by expanding and contracting only your rib cage
laterally, i.e., to the left and right simultaneously.[/li]
[li]Relax and let go of the previous steps and focus only on
your upper chest. That’s mostly a forward expansion. Don’t be
concerned if your ribs get a little involved, just do the best
you can.[/li]
[li]Now move on to your upper back and shoulders. This is often
the most challenging area of the body due to inflexibility
brought on by tension.[/li]
[li]After you have acquired a sense of each individual breath we
combine them in one breath. It’s usually quite a slow breath. In
one inhalation, go from low in your stomach to your lower back.
From there expand your ribs sideways and come to your upper
chest, then upper back and shoulders. Don’t stress yourself. Be
gentle.[/li]
[li]When you complete your in-breath, don’t try to reverse the
sequence on your out-breath and definitely don’t hold your
breath. Just let your whole body relax and the out-breath will
take care of itself. Sometimes saying ‘relax’ to yourself helps
with that.[/li]
[li]In some places in your body you will probably feel your
breath more than in others. If you don’t think you are actually
breathing into a location, put your attention on the location
and you will find it grows in its capacity to. Once you become
competent in this contemplation, the separation between each
location will smooth.[/li]
There you have it, something that has probably never been taught
to you, and something that will open up some new doors. What
doors? Well, they are your doors and I would rather you find out
for yourself what’s hidden. Having said that, there is one
particular door which I found very interesting and we will get
into in the following contemplation.

I've been doing this one for a few months now....and it is
sublime.
In terms of realigning with that signature sensation (yes....an
experience, I know) of engaging the frontier of "growth", for
lack of a better word, of awareness....as a diffusing process
into and through the presumed solidity of the world at large
around me at any given point in time....this one is extremely
effective.

Hi all,
I am writing here, just to put it out there, that another person
may have a helpful pointer for me.
I seem to confuse myself greatly over doing FBB.
I see FBB as a key practice, which probably should be simpler
than I have made it out to be.
Anyway, I have 2 ways of approaching practicing a FBB.
The first: Do each part in section, and they kind of join
together as you do them. As in, breath in belly, then breath in
the lower back, then the ribs and chest, and finally into the
upper back.
This quite hard to write about. It's almost as if each part is
done as when practiced individually, and then it's released at
the end. This way, for me, takes more concentration. . And it
seems it allows
for more energy, and I just feel generally more awake, like I
can appreciate what is happening around me, everything seems
more alive. This way also means that i will not need to breath
as much, as in until I do a next round of breath from
the last round of breath, as it could be more efficient way of
breathing.
This is also a bit more jolty at first, doing each section
individually in one breath, but does this kind of segmented
feeling of doing a FBB kind of smooth out with more practiice?
Or do I go with the second way (written below)?
The second way I practice:
It is done as continuous breath. One inhale. Which meaans if I
miss section, then I miss a section. I seem not to be able to go
from the belly breath to the lower back when doing it as a
continuous breath. This is why it does not
seem like a proper FBB. However, it is more relaxing. A more
peaceful way of breathing. Maybe becaause I am not thinking
about it so much? Should I just do it in one inhale, this way,
and just be aware that I am not breathing in one section, and
then awareness can take care of it, if it wants to?
Sorry if this is probably very confusing for people, a tricky
topic to write about in words.
If you want a bit more clarity about it, feel free to ask me
questions about it so that I can shed a bit more light of what I
am talking about.
I am being very selfish here, looking for assistance. But I have
put quite a bit of time into this, and just looking to have some
clarity with FBB.

All good peeps :)
I think it was just my my mind playing tricks on me.
None of the options I said were exactly there answer.
I just needed to give myself some breathing space, feel what I
was feeling, allowing for something else to surface.
I won't say how I am doing it now, because I will probably just
jinx myself.
It's not perfect, but well, FBB feels now both relaxing and
energising.

Jed's intention was for the entire sequence to occur within a
single inhalation. All the individual parts are just practice.
You want to get the hang of expanding each segment individually,
so you know you're not missing something when you put all the
pieces together. Eventually, you want your breaths to be long
enough that each area has a chance to fill on the way up. That's
full body breathing!
I'm happy you discovered your own answer, however! The best
answers are always the ones you find on your own. These kinds of
questions are so common that I'm going to write a post about
following instructions for Jed's contemplations (and others)!

Thanks Zara. I am still a bit confused about it, but all good.
I'll play around a bit with it to see if I can find what works.
Look forward to reading your post about following Jed's
contemplation (and others).
