Re: Coming up with an original thought... ever done it?

“There is nothing new under the sun.” I agree, although even
this “thought” (from Ecclesiastes) is not original.
I kind of thought that Einstein might have had an original
thought, such as E=mc^2. But that’s hardly original either, is
it?
Novelty theory (Terrance McKenna) comes to mind. Now that man
could string together all kinds of colorful and diverse beads to
make a shiny new necklace. But, original?
Me? Nope. Never. Once, “I want to kiss her,” occurred to me in
thought. It seemed quite original at the time, to me, but no.
Leonard Cohen says it best: “Yes, many loved before us, I know
that we are not new.”
Does God think? If he does, I like this one the best, attributed
to him: “Come now, and let us reason together,” Says the LORD,
“Though your sins are like scarlet, They shall be as white as
snow; Though they are red like crimson, They shall be as wool.”
So what are we doing here with all this (non-original) thinking
and doing? The Prophet (in Ecclesiastes) says it’s all a kind of
“chasing after the wind.”
I think... now what was I was thinking? Oh yeah, “All roads lead
to a dead end.” That’s my most (non) original thought of late.
Like it just popped into my head out of nowhere, and everywhere!

Yes, Alan Watts was something special. Leonard as well. Two
beads together making a necklace, hardly original. And Denise,
that's not original at all.. in fact, I dreamed the same thing
this a.m. Original means totally original, not just a new
combination of old things. Yes, rephrasing is not original.
Stay well ya'all...
Much love, Jed

I would rather be free than original, but maybe you need to have
an original thought to be free.

You can never be free as long as 'you' exist. You are only free
to the degree that there is no 'you'.... making sense???? Let me
know.
Love ya, Jed.

Ha....I love reading all these replies. Infinity riffing itself
in all these voices....thx for the thread, Jed!
So thoughts about thinking (things for the Thing King), some
thing I've been watching (who's been watching?!) for years now.
Watching my thoughts....sheesh.....kind of like being on a
deserted island with a solar powered TV which only plays reruns
of My Three Sons. Awful, trite, redundant, but compelling in
some ironically twisted way *shakes playful fist at Maya* .
The Thing King is this contraption that rides shotgun with that
which itself rides upon burgeoning, emergent, direct
experience.....when, when seen from the naked state (having
GLIMPSED some thing of this, I believe...though hard to tell
from the "me" that looks in retrospect and attaches words to
experience), is mysterious beyond description. The Thing King
steps in....always and forever trailing after naked,
unfathomable experience....and stakes its claim, constructing
words/ideas around the experience....like a church being built
around an ineffable mote of light....trying to
capture...fixate...harden....................control. The Thing
King is the shadow trailing the actual. Its the clattering tin
cans dragged behind the wedding couple.
The truly original is thoughtless! ...as in, "How could you be
so....." :) Being thoughtless is strange (utterly original) and
inevitably leads to estrangement. Which is horrifying for the
wimpering social side of me. No wonder no one is original. I
mean, how could true originality exist in the traditional sense!
Wouldn't it utterly disappear?

All this thinking activity I seem to have is just a recycling of
the past, and whatever I think of as being "the past" is not
real, because the past I think I experienced was seen through
various filters of delusive matter, false perception and
stories. There's an nonexistent mind saying a nonexistent past
happened, when in reality none of this ever happened.
Therefore, if the past is BS, and thought is based on the past,
doesn't that mean all thoughts are also BS?
If thought is nothing but BS, can it be said to be original? Are
hallucinations original?
My only conclusion is that thought cannot be original, because
it does not exist.
Isn't "what is" the only original thing there could ever be?
Isn't everything else just fumes of delusion flying everywhere?

"You can never be free as long as 'you' exist. You are only free
to the degree that there is no 'you'".
Well, that's an original. And humorous, too.
Yesterday I heard:
"Don't forget, only if your're dead nothing can happen to you
anymore".
Look, what's goin down the drain, it's only compensated pain.
You may think it's all in vain, nothing but illusion will
remain.

Original thoughts I receive when I think for myself, which is
easily said but seldom happens. It's a listening to an
independent source that's behind the scene.
This listening is a good focus. Trying to write down only
original thoughts and delete all the rest and watching how mind
claims these thoughts for his own putting it in its garbage
clothes.
These days of "crisis" many new and original thoughts take place
in reality. There were similar situations in the past but never
in relation to such a strongly entangled economic and financial
and networking communication system. I don't know what's going
to happen but I see it in my own special and original way, if I
open my eyes.
