If you think you are ''living'' then you probably think you will
die some day. Both quite erroneous. Trying to stop thinking is
just more thinking.. good luck with that one.
Your contemplation assignment it so get very curious about what
you next thought will be, hunt it down relentlessly.
Feedback always welcome.. now go do it.

I"ve been down the road of trying to stop thinking after someone
recommended "The Power of Now" to me six or seven years ago. Its
like a gym workout. But you are proposing an exercise and ok, I
accept the assignment. I've been doing it this afternoon and my
understanding of the assignment is evolving.
If the assignment is to remain curious about what the next
thought will be then its an aspect of what I've already learned
to do, and which has worked out well when I can muster it (when
thoughts aren't "screwing things up".
I've realized that waiting curiously for just about anything
life has to offer is a sound policy for escaping the idea that
something is wrong. I never thought about doing it with thought
though.
I am a bit concerned about all of the forgetting that I seem to
endure and that I'll simply forget to remain curious about which
new thought is coming down the pike. Maybe I ought to get
curious about what I'll forget next and all of it will just
become part of a strange party.
Now just one more thing about your reply
I sort of get it that I"m not alive (sort of as in like my
understanding of that concept is like Jello and I'm only
partially set). And it does stand to reason that if I"m not
alive then I can't very well die. But what about all of the
memento mori, death awareness, true za-zan, spending time in
cemeterys and cocked guns pointed at the head and "I love the
fact of my own death" stuff?

What about all that stuff... what about any stuff... all stuff
is doing is occupying one until you discover your true nature.
Nothing matters, but finding who you are matters more than
anything else. All you have ever done is to avoid the
nothingness that you are.

Based on "your contemplation assignment it so get very curious
about what you next thought will be, hunt it down relentlessly."
1. I noticed that the thoughts fall into the following
categories
A) Loss thoughts-these are about peril that I see myself facing
B) Thoughts about how others might see my actions
C) Thoughts about what others are thinking
D) Thoughts about changing the circumstances of others
E) Thoughts about changing the circumstances my own life
F) Thoughts that assign an arbitrary quality to the current
perception (including current thoughts).
G) Thoughts about alternatives to perceptions that are assigned
low quality with the idea that I "should have" done things
differently
H) Construction of simplistic models of the future (which
overlaps A-G)
2. All of the thoughts seem to be tied to a physical feeling.
Some of the feelings are subtle. So for example a thought about
house repair occurred with an associated feeling that generally
comes with control. It is barely discernible compared to a
thought that occurred about my ex-wife who has threatened to
continue suing me for years. The feeling associated with that is
some amplification of what always accompanies fear of loss.
3. It does not seem possible to know where the thoughts
originate. The standard understanding is that "I think of them".
In this scenario my brain or mind is the origin. But they seem
to sort of arrive. Which might be an indicator that they arrive
from an external source. The exercise calls free will into
question and I have always perceived a sense of calm when
operating under the idea that there is essentially no free will.
Over the course of a few hours I felt like I was having a lot of
fun with the exploration.
5. I found myself awake in the middle of the night watching the
cave wall again. I expect that I'll continue an exploration of
thoughts but an "abiding" understanding of my true nature
remains as elusive as ever.
In another thread you said "Extensive spinning of the record
leaves deep grooves, vestiges of these will always be around...
just shadows of a former dream." These are more than vestiges
for me. Maybe the edges are eroding on the grooves though. I
know a guy who advocates pushing the boundaries of reality to
hasten the erosion. He has a specific understanding on the
nature of reality so that one can be more confident in just
going for it. I've done that and maybe its done worn the grooves
down a bit. I still get pretty upset sometimes.

Sounds like you are doing the work but you are not doing it the
way I would like you to. The tske is to get seriously curious
about your next thought, ''what will that be''. You are
analyzing those thoughts, categorizing them. That's just more
thinking. I want you to watch your thoughts like a cat watching
a mouse. Simple, very simple. Do not get caught up in any
judgment or analysis, the task is to continually seek to become
aware of your next thought. If that thought is you need to
understand the thought, then that is just your next thought, not
action is to be take, just watch and be curious.
NO additional action, just watch. I suggest you do thing in
short burst as it require discipline, try 10 minutes at a time.
Love ya, Jed.

It is dizzying to watch the thoughts. Physically, I'm in a dizzy
state anyway with my head pulsating, some left side paralysis
and an eye that won't blink. Compared to what I'm used to these
physical things are very different and focusing on thoughts
coming in really is disquieting.
As each thought arrives and is observed it seems to burst like a
balloon. One after another poof, poof, poof. Sometimes the
succession is rapid and I can barely keep up.
Since this physical stuff began in January there's been a lot of
music pouring through my head. Just streams of random music, or
perception of "mind's ear" sounds (since it isn't really sound)
that can be a sort of beat or pattern. At times these just roll
over and over. I can't say that I haven't experienced it prior
to January, but it is more prevalent for sure.
Does that musicy stuff count as a thought? Watching it and then
having it pop like a balloon only to restart again is dizzying.
