VW 16v F3 Engine
By: Tonyb Date: November 2, 2012, 3:41 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
Now anyone who know me knows I'm not a really a fan of the VW
KR/ABF type 16v engine however I recently had the chance to buy
one that had come out of a Dallara F3 race car for a very
reasonable price. It's done a big end but that's no problem.
It's got some tidy bits on and in it, is dry sumped and was
supposed to be around 225bhp in throttle bodies so a good basis
to build a tidy engine. With that power it's no real use as the
8v is not far off that but I reckon between Jason and I we can
sort that out ;D
Here are some pics, not in a rush but will build it up over the
next year and see how it comes on. May swap the dry sump system
on to the 8v engine (it's a Spiess set up) as I have half an
idea to put that back in a Dallara at some point and use the 16v
engine in the Golf. We'll see.

Apart from having too many valves it looks like a good purchase
Tony ;)

on the subject of waterpumps - motorcross engines are often
fitted with aftermarket waterpumps that flow better than std -
less restrictive water passage, and improved impellors. Wonder
if such mods could be made to vag pumps????

The spacers are just a couple of gaskets sandwiched up to fill a
gap Brian. As it's an ABF block I'm guessing the Spiess water
pump that was made to fit the DX block is shorter at this point,
than an ABF water pump. Bit Heath Robinson, but seems to work.
As the ABF is not an ideal race engine I've decided that I'll
use the dry sump set up on the DX block based FSi race engine
I'm going to build. I'll sell off the other parts to fund the
next engine. This one has got 12.5:1 forged pistons, 300 degree
cams with 13mm of lift and solid lifters etc. etc. so some nice
bits with little mileage on them. The motor never made more than
230bhp and the torque was not good so the previous owner went to
Vauxhall power after playing with 20v turbo power for a while.
He reckoned the Vauxhall was in a totally different league to
the VW 16v engine.
This is interesting as I have recently seen some flow figures
for a ported FSi head on std valves recently that shows the std
valve size head flows at least as well as a works head and not
so far off a full race EX head except at the very top end so
that says that 300+bhp on std valve sizes is achievable - handy!
The previous owner of the F3 16v actually told me the 16v never
went quicker that the 8v Spiess engine he had in it before. It
had more outright power but it lacked the torque of the Spiess
motor.

I think we should freshen that 16v up Tony....there should be
more in there with some TLC....of course not 8v grunt tho ;D

That looks good.

If you do sell the dry sump set up, do let me know.
