MOT Rant
By: chrismc Date: October 29, 2012, 2:33 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
I took my Mk1 Leon Tdi 110 daily for its MOT last week.
Had no reason to suspect it had any major faults- it's on 164k,
but that's just run-in for a modern day oil burner.
Anyhow, got a call later to say 'sorry it's failed'.
Mid pipe shot, & downpipe leaking- thus 'both require
replacement'- ~£350 all in
Got round to having a quick look today & could only find a tiny
pin-prick just behind the cat & then a slight hole (maybe half a
thumbnail size) just ahead of the d/p to rear section joint)
'Mid pipe shot' - what mid pipe? It's only a 2 piece system &
the rear section is in decent shape!
Anyhow, went to ECP & parted with £108 for a new downpipe to be
on the safe side , then set about taking the car apart....
Took the sleeve joint (d/p to rear section) off & it quickly
became apparent that the hole was actually very minor- & some
assembly paste combined with sliding the sleeve forward 0.5" was
all that was required to make the joint totally gas-tight again.
I can't believe the MOT place has firstly failed it on the wrong
section- & secondly wanted to charge me for a replacement
system!
I shall be having words!!!! ;)

Some testers are like that mate. You could have taken it to a
different station and it may well have passed on an advisory.
Let us know what they say

Took it back in & it flew through..
Once the MOT was safely in my hands I politely pointed out the
repair had cost me ~£5 for some jointing compound- somewhat less
than the £350 quoted :o
"Oh, hmm, well.....I shall speak to the tester involved sir"
said the somewhat embarrassed service manager...
I shall go elsewhere next year :D
