       Weight reduction & MOT's
By: chrismc Date: October 16, 2012, 1:42 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
Can anyone give me some pointers before I introduce my angle
       grinder to one Honda Prelude.....?
I'm looking to remove some excess ballast from the car (namely
parts of the rear inner wings & quarters as well as some of the
strengthening bars in the bootlid but don't want to run into
       trouble come MOT time
There isn't an undo button on the grinder!! :o
The car is gradually morphing into a dedicated track car but
still requires an MOT so we can drive it to trackdays
       Any guidance appreciated!
       Chris

I'll point my man Tony at this thread...he's an advocate of
lightness...and a Jap fan...with one H badge in the garage
       alongside an FQ300...but he's forgiven as there's an 8v Mk2 Gti
in the mix too!...and the fact he's an MOT inspector maybe
       handy! ;)

       Cheers mate
I'm not aiming to go mad & turn it into something that folds up
in a stiff breeze- but there appears to be weight that is safely
removable from the bootlid, & rear inner wings & quarters as
well as some little brackets that can come out :)

hi chris, yes as long as the doors/tailgate latch open and shut,
any seats fitted have a seatbelt,
lights work as normal pretty much you should be ok,
feel free to text me with specifics before you cut etc,
       cheers matey,

also have look through the mot manual,
  HTML http://www.motuk.co.uk/manual/contents.htm
  HTML http://www.motuk.co.uk/manual_610.htm
i would say no cutting within 30cm of any mounts/load bearing
       parts,
       ;)

       Tones- top man!
Thanks very much for the info. 8)
Plans include chopping out some metal from the rear inner
quarters & arches, removing the jack bracket & some other little
bits & bobs. Nothing to compromise safety. Might have a look at
the door panels under what's left of the cards too :)
Once the sunroof & rails are gone along with the 4ws as well
then I should be on for over 100kgs total removed so far...still
looks stock from a distance though
Gotta keep these tweaked 16v VW's in sight somehow :D

Having had a quick look at the manual- I'm hoping the MOT place
won't be looking too hard for airbags :o
Both pax & drivers have been removed (aftermarket wheel)- though
a simple bit of wiring ensures no SRS lamp will be lit.
Also need to get the horn working again using parts from a non
       cruise/airbag prelude.

See...I knew I'd have a use for him nearly 30 years ago! ;D
When Tony puts some pics up of his fleet Chris you'll see how a
MK2 Golf can look along the lines of yr Honda...standard looking
till you get up close and work out what's missing/lighter than
       VW intended!
Get cutting...there'll be Veedoubleyah breathing down yr
       tailpipes soon enough! ;)

biggest weight saving is lightweight seats (kirky alloy one) in
       passenger side,
       race battery,
lightweight wheels (inertia to be turned) a lot more feel than
       expected,
       soundproofing/tar pads,
       underseal scraped/melted off underneath,
       perspex windows,
alloy sheet in place of steel (did a sheet in my bonnet) 17kg
       down to 4kg,
       add it all up,
       ;)

Yes it all helps....especially when giving ~200kgs away to a mk2
       GTi in stock guise :o
