Tony have you had a read through some of the kamei history
thread i have over on cgti?
I know angioletti & co were modifying rear beams in 1980 and
winning.
I have some peoples contact details if you ever want someone to
throw some questions back and fore too.

Mike, I don't have enough free time to read all your Kamei
thread on CGTI :). Serioulsy I wouldn't mind some details if
the guys are happy to talk about things, no point in reinventing
the wheel.

Hi Tony
I like what you have done here, its smarter than the towers
idea, but do you think it needs the towers at all? Why not just
brace the beam across the corner with plates?
Given the number of golfs racing the world over, i am suprised
there isnt a really nice lightweight fabbed rear beam available.
I ve never seen one.....anyone else?

I have been thinking of different ways to go about
building/adapting the MK2 beam, I think the turrets have there
merits in reducing camber angle changes and toe changes but at
the same time adding weight is a real no no as far as I'm
concerned. I would like to build a lighter stiffer beam.
One question about rear beams, it seems some of the successful
track cars tortionally stiffen them up a lot with extra anti
role bars and welding in plates to reduce the amount of twist in
the beam. This takes the beam further away from an independent
suspension system in that when one wheel acts the other is then
forced to react accordingly. It seems like it is just one big
anti role bar.
Why is it (by the people who add extra anti roll bars) not
considered desirable to make the beam act more like an
independent suspension setup? Does anyone else think that the
beam should be made to act more like an independent system and
have less torsional rigidity?

A number of people have mentioned that to me over the years Tom,
but from what I can gather some that have tried it on a Golf
haven't made it work. I've seen the same in the (old) Mini world
in the past...some just cant get to grips with a beam axle over
a subframe...yet many successful race cars work with independent
rear...I think kit's just about development and hitting the
sweet spot. ???

Thanks Jason, I think if I was to look at the beam and develop
it in anyway I would to improve handling I would go for a near
independent acting beam. :o
I would concentrate as a whole on both the front and rear
suspension and would try to stop the tripoding that our Golfs
tend to do and work on keeping both rear wheels on the ground by
increasing travel and droop and keeping the wheels more
independent.
The aim of the indi beam would be to reduce the diagonal loading
onto the front outside tyre, and try to control the pitch and
yaw of the cars body better. Selecting the right springs will
help here too.
I have a couple of ideas about turning the beam into a near
independent system but still keeping it a 'beam' which might be
useful for Motorsport regulations. I will try and sketch one out
when I have to free time and then people can critique it.
