       Hillclimb tyres

       Hi
       Conventional wisdom suggests that Avon crossplies are the way to
       go, usually supersoft A15 or A39 compound. Personally i dont get
       on with them, but maybe thats because my car is too heavy at
       950kg. Radials are better for me, but supersoft compounds are
       scarce. Have used michelin moulded rally slick NO2 to some
       success, and similar Dunlop CR311 in 'wet' X22 seems good,
       although i have not personally used it.
       What are your experiences?

       Does anyone use Circuit 'wet' tyres?
       They are SUPER soft. Maybe too soft? They soon get chewed up in
       the dry, but maybe not too bad on a short hill and a light car?
       We have some of the excellent 15inch Dunlop wets part-worn that
       could be tried....

       I dont think wets would have enough grip, soft yes, but too
       little tread on the ground. Have an email with dunlop presently
       enquiring about uncut wets which might be an option....

       I use Dunlop CR311 in X22 super soft compound. Works fine but
       could use a softer compound on the hills. On a sprint at say
       Pembrey on the second loop they are just starting to go off so
       as an all round tyre pretty good.
       They are also cheaper that 'proper' slicks at about half the
       price (approx £500.00 a seat as opposed to £1000.00 a set!!).
       That said I am told that Avon radials in a proper hill climb
       compound are worth at least a second over a rally slick. I have
       a set of 8j rims here ready to check this out but that will be
       next year now. I'll let you know when I do!
       As I under stand x22 is a wet compound, they normally cut them
       in to full wets. I use them un cut as wets and they are fine as
       long as there is not too much standing water. It's not unheard
       of for the Golf to be the fastest car on circuit in the wet on
       x22 slicks! Great feel and confidence from them.

       Out of interest ... what suspension `set up` did you run the
       crossplies with ? , especially camber.

       Used -1 to -1.5, about as much as you would want to put on a
       crossply but less than a radial typically uses

       FYI ... many people `up here` use zero camber in order to get
       them `to work`. A varied mix of small hatches through to
       Caterhams etc.

       I think that works ok on a Caterham, but hatchbacks lean a
       lot.....

       My ibiza used to fold over the outer edge of the tyre even with
       some negative camber on. Discussed it all with paul smith at
       bmtr at the time (avon guru) and only conclusion was that
       radials would suit my car better. And have gone much faster on
       them than on avon hillclimb crossplies. Go figure....
