Is it worth porting an otherwise standard engine?
By: Tristan Date: January 19, 2015, 6:28 pm

Here's the deal , the G/F has a 1990 mk2 8v that she adores ,
lots of family history etc and has it since 1996 . After a layup
of 3 years or so , I re-commisioned it , lots of tidying , vac
hoses etc.
Now , despite running ok , it's in need of a freshen up .
Definitely needs valve stem seals , and realistically rings too
. My question is.... are there any gains to be made to an 8v PB
, with no mads at all (and none allowed either!) ? As in , must
keep stock quiet exhaust system , standard valves and cam , no
high compression pistons , no tubular mani etc. , and must keep
original head and block , and stock crank.
I'll get away with a slight overbore , and as it happens I have
new KS 0.5 or 1.0mm 8v pistons going spare (need to check
which!) , and I have told her about "blue-printing" , telling
her it's just making the best of the standard parts.
I was thinking of a slight head skim , advisable anyways no
doubt , and gain a wee bit of compression , back cutting the
valves and a bit of tidying around the seats and throats , and
just cleaning up the ports and inlet mani .
Or is that a waste on a stock engine? I don't mind putting in
effort for small reward . Or is there anything else worth doing?
Any gains to be had in the exhaust manifold? or in the OE
airbox? I could probably get away with taking a kilo off the
flywheel too ? the car gets used for commuting in the summer
months so has to stay traffic friendly.
all advice gratefully received.

Price up the parts before jumping in and rebuilding the engine.
eg
rebore £80, head gasket bolts be bearings gaskets cambelt kit
£200 etc
There are no cheap engine rebuilds
I have a fully modified JMR 8v big valve (40.5) head and
matching inlet and cast ported ex manifold spare ATM. This would
be fantastic on an otherwise std engine. It would look bog std
from the outside
You would have to come to me to see it. I'm not jumping through
any hoops to get rid, as I have half an idea to supercharge an
8v
pm me if interested

I remember back in the day I had my PB 'chipped' by Geoff
Everett (RIP) @ AmD in Bicester. It only gained around 5bhp peak
however it drove so much better- no lag/hesitancy on/off the
throttle which some PB's were absolutely terrible for. Took it
to the naughty side of 120bhp too.
I'm not sure if the likes of superchips or similar still do mk2
stuff but it really helped mine....
I eventually went 2L with BVH as it got smokey- bores glazed.
Work was done by Al @ Autotechnik (sadly defunct) in Totton.
IIRC he ported & matched the stock manifolds. Certainly any help
you can give on the exhaust side should help it rev a bit more
cleanly.
Definitely Id recommend the flywheel lightening. Don't be shy.
It didn't ever make mine a pain in traffic etc...
If also consider getting the injectors cleaned/checked if they
have plenty of miles on them.
With the airbox you can always smooth out any internal ribs.
There is an oval plastic plate in the front that holds the stock
snorkel which can be removed. More induction noise under load-
but I always thought this sounded pleasant!!

I know its not the cheapest way, but it's her pride and joy, she
she makes the call. And She has said a vehement No to stuff like
that head, Jon. Sadly.... I think she likes the fact the car
will keep the head and block it came with. It was a struggle to
get her to agree to mk3 top amounts and G60 brakes!

ok.
Don't see the logic, but let us know how you get on

Surely you can appreciate that woman and logic are two forces
that shall never mix.

Hi Jon I may be interested in that head if Tristan can't
persuade his better half to see the error of her ways ;-) , when
I've finished the cabrio I've still got the original 1.8 DX
block so am thinking about building another engine and getting a
tin top mk1 - if you're in no rush when mine's on the road I can
maybe take you up on that offer and when I pop down to see Jason
come and see you and your car? Jason (cabrio 2 litre cross flow,
45's)

Always welcome, but we talk and work (and drink tea) in my
garage. I travel quite a lot, often at short notice, so its hard
to book ahead.
Croft easter Monday light abf ed mk1 on slicks? (Sprinting)
