       Solid MK2 steering rack mount.
By: Smudge Date: November 7, 2013, 2:34 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
       Hi all.
I was asked recently by sparrow ( from northloop and Clubgti) if
I could help him out. He was after a solid steering rack mount
for his mk2 golf and had tried a few places but was let down.
The idea of solid mounts came from a MK3 race car (pascel's I
       beleive).
Anyway, I was happy to help out and in the process make myself a
mount at the same time, it was kind of lucky when he asked me
about making one becuase I had a subframe sitting in the garage
and I had just ordered a new steering rack too :D
First off I set about measuring up and sketching the mount in
CAD, I then made a wooden model to test out the manufacturing
steps, the dimensions and the design.

I ordered the alu and set about making the mount, the two halves
are milled with flats to the correct sizes, bolted together and
       then bored on the lathe.

To finish of I milled the mount to remove material and weight.

I sent the first prototype mount to sparrow who realised when
trying to fit it, that a notched was needed for the pipe that
equalises the steering rack gaiters when on steering lock.
It was easy to mill into the mount. Here is the final version,
I'm going to fit mine over the winter and test it next year,
sparrow will be doing the same, hopefully it should work well!

I have been to a factory and got a price for them to be CNC
       milled.  ::)

Nice. What stops the rack moving side to side Tom?
Does a stock GTI drive better with solid mounts?

Howdy, the mount is designed so it clamps around the rack
tightly, however, at the other end of the rack it bolts solidly
down onto the subframe, it's this joint that stops it moving.
The solid mount will stop any sideways deflection that the std
rubber or polly items allowed. When I fit my mount I will be
using a loctite compound around the rack to improve the joint
       further.
I will test mine out next year when the cars back on the road,
it should help firm up the steering feel on track.
