Golf 16v catch tank and breather build.

If this is not the right place, Mods please move it. :)
A while ago I started designing and making a catch tank for my
engine, I was experiencing a little bit of oil in my current
'open' catch tank. The new design used a pipe with small holes
drilled through as a baffle to condense the oil mist vapours I
was experiencing at high 7000+rpm.

The clear top was to help with testing purposes so I could
whatch how the oil mist behaved, the pipe definitely did its job
when watched on a dyno, however, more to follow...

We don't do post shuffling here Tom!...lol! ;D
Looks good as we've come to expect.
Where have you got the take off from the engine Tom...one off
the block & one off the cam cover?

Hi
I have one pipe entering the catch tank from the breather in the
block. The other pipe exits the tank and drops to below the
subframe to vent the gases and make sure there are no fumes in
the cabin. ;D
Now, I am in the process of adding a cam cover breather and will
update this with pictures 8)

Are you getting an oil `mist` from the oil filler cap ?

[/quote]
I'm getting lots of oil leaking from the filler cap onto the cam
cover when at high revs. This is a new thing the engine has
started doing. The cap seems to be made from two parts and acts
as a blow of valve if the pressure gets to much. Seems the
pressure in my head is getting high enough to blow this and
allow oil to leak out. >:(
My catch tank does not seem to get any oil in it! The take off
is from the block, very strange because if the rings were going
I would assume the pressure would be in the block too...
Anyway, to stop future oil cap leaks and relieve the pressure in
the head I am in the process of fitting a cam cover breather,
pics and details to follow over the winter.

Thanks for the details ...
When I had this excessive `oil mist` from the oil filler cap on
a 9A running to 7800rpm it coincided with me checking the KJet
air inlet system.
For the oil and emulsion in the block breather - air inlet
system I fitted a plastic bottle catch tank off the block with
the outlet still routed to the air inlet for vacuum purposes.
I then ran the sump oil level at 50%
The catch tank captured an emulsion of 95% water - 5% oil and
cleaned up the air inlet system
The oil mist from the oil filler cap reduced significantly

After a few track days and plenty of road miles the catch tank
only has a small amount of oil in it, I have always planned to
make a condenser to fit into the block so that any oil mist is
condensed and collect back into the block instead of the catch
tank. I took inspiration for this from the 8valve cam cover.
I have used a Chevi V8 breather (very cheap of eBay) and I
machined some billet aluminium up into a tube to hold the
breather into the block, the tube slides tightly into the std
block breather. ATM this is completely untested and will not be
tested until next year.

So the block breathing system is in place and I'm happy with how
it's working.
I have, experienced bad oil leakages from my cam cover oil
filler cap as detailed in an above post. This has spurred me on
to add a cam cover breather to the 16v, my first port of call
was the VAG parts bin for an off the shelf breather that fits
into the oil filler cap. It comes from some of the 1.8T engines
I beleive, the beetle and others. VAG PN 06A 103 465
I have only just fitted this but need to plumb it in and make a
reducer from 25mm down to 12.5mm. Parts are on order for this...
The breather swirls the air oil mist in a circle to try and
separate it, I will improve the breathers condensing qualities
by adding gauze to it's internals.
